| I think salford are being clever. As well as the obvious benefits of signing a higher quality of player, it may also help their franchise bid. If salford, with all their new players, are sitting pretty at maybe 5/6/7 in SL when license decisions are made, surely a part of the RFL will be thinking that they would look foolish kicking out a team so far up the table when their are other sides further down with similar off field quality.
Not saying this is the reason why they have decided to spend bigger this year but it could certainly help come franchise time.

I think it's EXACTLY the reason why they're spending so much on their recruitment for next year. Fair play to them, I say.

How about kicking out a side that could have potentially reached the play-offs two seasons running (Cas) or a team that has reached the play-offs once (Wakefield).
Hmm, by that rule of thumb, onfield performance Salford would still be - or just as weaker - than the other two.

| Are these two players guys that are exempt from the quota, since they were here before the new rules came in, or does the fact their original contract has expired negate that?

| A seem to remember Wakefield signing loads of ageing + high profile players a few years ago - steve prescott, bobbie goudling etc
It was a resounding flop and they nearly went bust.
I hope it goes well just before they move to their new stadium but I would be far happier if they got a decent coach + invested in youth.
I cant understand why McRae has still got in a job in SL - how many times does he have to stuff it up + still keep his job.
He must be the best salesman in the business.

| signing numerous players well past their best, should do a reasonable job for you but still not enough to end up in the top 8 in my opinion, i think 9/10th for u next season

Surely all Super League contracts have a clause that renders them null and void in the case that the club loses its franchise?

| As I understand things, Salford building a more competitive squad (albeit relying on players at end of their careers) for next season, won't make much difference to the license negotiations. The negotiations will already be underway by the time the new squad makes any difference (if it does), and importing veteran players doesn't tick any boxes.

46042.jpg [quote="Bonzo":23qz4bj5]Corrected.
Incidentally, an exclamation mark ends a sentence and does not require a full stop. The first letter of the next word begins a new sentence and should therefore be capitalised. [i:23qz4bj5]Who needs flankers[/i:23qz4bj5]' grammar was actually correct.

I would imagine so. Although, I remember after Cas were relegated, Platt signed for Bradford on the presumption that his contract was void but there wasn't a clause in his contarct and so after he slated us in the media he had to come back and train at Cas for 2 months until Bradford coughed up £10,000 .

To fair to the club I think we have attempted to fly the 'young and British' flag since our promotion/licence approval. Myler, Turner, Ratchford, Sidlow, Jewitt, Adamson have been first team regulars. Myler and Turner left and we've looked to Broughton, Smith, Tyrer, Gibson and Boyle this year and a handful of our juniors are currently helping a battered squad complete the remaining fixtures.
Granted, this recruitment drive is a fairly big swing in the opposite direction but it's clear that to stand any chance of playoff contendership we need to be lead by an improved set of established talent.

| I love the fact that Bailey and Feka are 28 and 30. They sign for Salford and suddenly they are veterans at the end of their careers.

| Salford should be replaced by a club like Leigh or Widnes, if they came up, they wouldn't sign any Australians with SL experience, they would sign young English players like Tomkins or Eastmond.

Yes they signed a shed load of ageing players that season:
Goulding and McNamara (2icon_cool.gif
Maloney (27)
Prescott and Jowitt (26)
Sampson (22)
Hudson (20)
Like you say this was a bad strategy. In future Wakefield concentrated on bringing in players from overseas who were much more consistent performers, Solomona, Domic, Demetriou, they did a lot better.
