You've completely contradicted yourself in the same post, there. Don't forget that many of the emergency services who have helped the Cumbrian communities this past week are charities with no central funding.

Have a look here, I'm trying to raise money for those who been affected by the Cumbrian floods:
forums.rlfans.com/viewtopic.php?t=437930
I haven't been following this thread but I can confirm that many of those responding to the emergency were voluntary, e.g. mountain rescue, St John Ambulance (from as far as Chorley and south Yorkshire), Red Cross, Morecambe Bay rescue, RNLI, etc.
The idea of a charity match seems good, the timing over Christmas may not work as the Ike Southward memorial match between Workington and Whitehaven is scheduled.

| Quote: Cheshire Tiger "When the tsunami hit the south pacific there was talk of the RL community helping out. RU did the same with a Tsunami benefit game.
Now I know thousands were killed in the tsunamis but the Cumbrian towns have been decimated by the floods and PC Baxter lost his life.
Would it be appropriate to have a Cumbria Select v Super League Cumbrians or Super League XIII game to support any relief fund?
Sometime over Xmas?
Cumbria is our community and they often feel forgetten. I cant think of a better time to remind them they are not?
Opinions?'"
I don't see why. They chose to live there, possibly knowing it would be vulnerable to flooding.

Yes, and its a national disgrace that they have to rely on the public for funding. Absolute disgrace, its a view I have, sorry but i'd get rid of all charities. Responsibility for providing such services must become that of government

Aside from the fact that putting charities such as the RNLI under the control of the government of the day would be their death knell, you would be willing to stump up around an extra 15% from your salary in tax to pay for that would you?

Way too long
Its a political thing I know but we spend billions bombing third world countries, bailing banks out etc etc etc.
YET we have to rely on charities to be saved at sea, or to have a guide dog if we're blind etc etc etc
This has got to stop to make governments more responsible!
So no "charity" fundraiser for me

Are you saying we all put 15% of our income in buckets? I think not my friend

| Some of the Cumbrian players should follow the example of Sale Sharks winger Mark Cueto (from Workington) by raising some money for their home towns.

Yes extra funding from the government would be nice but there is no way that most charities could provide what they do if they were controlled by government. The reason a lot of them work so well is because they are largely controlled by volunteers who do it because they want to be doing it.
