Quote Slugger McBatt="Slugger McBatt"I am reading a book on the Foreman and Ali fight in 1974, and Ali's trainer was of the view that you can absorb any punch that you can see coming, and that's why Ali trained just on taking punches. His trainer said that it's the punches that you don't see coming that cause the knockouts, as the recipient has no time to protect himself. If it had been a big swinging punch, Stosic would have had time to move his head to absorb some of the blow. The fact that Stosic was over Cunningham would have made it less likely that his head would move back, and therefore the bones in his face took the full force of a punch from a physically strong athlete.
Three matches for me.'"
Anyone who knows even the slightest little bit about boxing should know that those are the hardest type of punches to take, short sharp jabs and short arm check hooks, it's because of the speed they can be delivered thus taking the recipient by surprise.
That will have been the deciding factor in this if Stosic has indeed sustained bad injuries. He wasn't expecting it at all so his face will have been relaxed. If you're stood toe to toe with someone in a fight you are expecting to take punches and will absorb them better.
I would much prefer someone to come windmilling at me than get in close and deliver a shot like that.
Someone I know was on the recieving end of a cowardly attack on a football field where someone came from behind and cracked him and made a real mess of his face. He wasn't a hard lad and it wasn't the best of shots by all accounts, but because the lad didn't see it coming it caused all sorts of damage and a fair amount of time in hospital.
Cheap shots like the one from KC should be dealt with severely IMO and even more harshly if a serious injury has occured.
