Wigan spent far more than Leigh compared to the rest of the league too. Sure Leeds spent a bit too and were their Featherstone, but the vast majority of the league had no chance. It was telling that the year they levelled the playing field, Wigan suddenly lost the trophies they'd had for a decade.'"
You do know that Leeds were the first full time Rugby League club don't you?
Wigan and Widnes followed soon after. St Helens were more or less full time, none of their overseas signings had jobs here and like Leeds they spent big but to no avail.
You and fans like you really do try to re-write history. Must try harder

Only one club had to sell their spiritual home to cover the debts their accrued spending big, and now have to play second fiddle to a third rate football club.

It was because of the cost of the Whitbread Stand, it went massively over cost due to old mining works. Carry on trying to re-write history though.
Latics are actually second rate (Championship don't you know).

Only by looking at sintellins can we understand the true meaning, the essence of success. A beacon of light in a dark, unforgiving world.

I can only assume they weren't alive or fans at the time otherwise they'd remember the truth.

| The amazing myth is that Wigan bought all the best players in that era.
What Wigan did was buy the players that would suit them like Hanley,Offiah etc with a combination of home grown players such as Faz,Gildart,Edwards,Radders,Marshall,Clark,Lucas etc.some not superstars like Cowie,Potter,Byrne,Mcginty etc
We just did it better than anyone else at the time. One thing we def did was get the best coaches Monie,Lowe which created a dynasty at the time.
We did go pro 94/95 season Leeds followed soon after, now they did try to buy their way to winning they even spent big money on the greatest full back ever from the All blacks but was not as successful. So for a good 8yrs or so Wigan was not full time-Faz was still training as joiner when he signed,Preston was trainng as a accountant,Clark was at college etc.
Re the stadium myth-Mr Whelan wanted a new stadium for the football but to get the funding he needed 2 different sports to share he toyed with the Idea with Orrell RU but dispelled that is would not work so he had bought Wigan Ath for £1 and because after the Whitbread stand costing too much Wigan were in a weak position so he bought them for 7million so now he owned his 2 different sports and so he built the stadium rest is history so to speak. He even flew back from his holiday home in Barbados to a AGM meeting at Wigan RL to buy all the shares he could get to get control and then flew back straight after.
Now this debate will go on for ever as there will always be someone to say Wigan bought,Wigan cheated,Wigan did this Wigan did that to win but the facts are they were dominant at the time and did it by being better than anyone at the time and did not cheat etc etc etc.

| Nobody's saying Wigan cheated (not in this respect anyway!)
But their being the equivalent of Leigh in the Championship this year is worthy of note at least.

Ok but it isnt the equivalent as everyone had the same chances as Wigan but Wigan did it better,as Saints have been doing as Leeds did it as did Bradford aswell.
Leeds when they won everything had the same chances as everyone else of course they did, just that they did it better as all other teams that win.
Other fans have really got to accept that Wigan were very good then and move on from coming up with reasons why they were good and stop blaming Wigan for their teams not being as good.
I for one accept that at various points that Bradford,Leeds and St helens have been great for a few years on and off (also Wigan have a won few things in super league aswell)
Success comes around for teams at various points yours might be starting who knows as could be ours (I would say it has started as we did win the CC),but good luck anyway.
As for Leigh, good on them I say.

Wigan are a great club, of course. Their youth system in particular is a shining example of that. However, I can remember being at Knowsley Road before a Derby and seeing players run across the grass outside in their work gear having worked the morning of the game. That was just before Super League. The idea that there was a level playing field in those days is way off. Saints might have been paying a few individuals enough to not work, particularly the overseas players, but there were plenty who were. And the majority of the league would have had less full time professionals than us. How Super League adapts back into semi-pro status is going to be interesting, as it's inevitably coming if things don't improve. The IMG changes have to be successful or we'll see those days again.

What a load of garbage , You leave out numerous players Wigan signed for big money which nearly sent them bust and led them to sell Central Park , Leeds followed suite not long after and paid big money for lesser players who were left after Wigan had picked the best and nearly went bust

| I remember the last game at Central Park after Tesco saved Wigan from extinction. Thousands of tesco carrier bags flying through the air and chants of “let’s all shop at tescos”. They actually beat St Helen’s that day but it was only the St Helens fans you could hear
Now they are rent boys who are told what to do by daddy football team.

How is that garbage when I have put some names down of lesser players so to speak.
I have explained Mr Whelans role in this and the Whitbread stand,if you and other people chose not to believe then that is your problem.

The last game at Central Park when Wigan beat you lot ,I also do remember that, the Tesco bags to that extent had already been done in games before.
So no need to change that history .
I also remember the last game at Knowsley against Wigan, you lost that aswell.

64-14 (if I remember it correcty) wasnt too shabby for us,but CC 27-0 is so much better as it was in front of thousands and on BBC,we got the cup you got 2 points.
I know which one I prefer.
Always remember Andy Greg saying Wigan won 28-0,someone corrects him says no you are wrong it is 27-0 he says thats right I forget its 27 not 28 but I always remember
zero.

| The impact of 75-0 was lessened by losing 70-0 to Leeds the week before IMO, it took away the shock value of getting hammered.
Agent Millward really did his best to destroy Wigan.

And saints fans can convince themselves that 75-0 after a drubbing by leeds is better than a 27-0 at Wembley,I can guarantee that more fans/viewers remember the 27-0 cup win as opposed to a 75-0 loss in the league.
I was there at them both and the 75-0 was difficult but great as we was singing "always look on the bright side of life" until the end.
We knew we was crap you knew we was crap but it was fun,(Leeds and St Helens deserved it)but you lot thought you was good enough to win the CC final and that is the difference, this is why 27-0 is so much sweeter than 2 points.
I know you cannot understand this as you havnt the capacity for reasonable thought.
