| As noted, NRL players have learned, a punch = a red, so just don't do it. Dumb, dumb, dumb. It was all Galloway's fault anyway. But Garbutt should have had more sense.
Still, good news for Leeds' next few opponents...

| Not really complaining about it - just saying he thinks the NRL have done the right thing with the no punching edict and that there are better ways to be 'tough' - which you can't disagree with....
Though personally I do hate the 'no punching' edict - I think it removes some of the theatre of the game, and actually often ruins the spectacle as players become frustrated - there's certainly more niggle and pointless fracas nowadays - in days gone by, it would be sorted with a dust up and the game would move on.... I do appreciate the risks associated with punches to the head - but feel those risks are more pertinent with King kits - otherwise boxing would be screwed as a sport.

| The frightening thing was how easy they made it look.
The effortless way which a simple pass would carve a gap open that was so huge reminded me of what you tend to see in the 70th/80th minute when a team is 30 points down, and they don't have any energy to make a decent defensive read. Except this was in the first ten minutes.
Just watch how easily the first NQC player waltzed through the Leeds defence - you don't see tries often like that scored in Super League where a player goes through untouched. We can't create gaps as efficiently or as well in this league.
Admittedly I thought Saints and Wigan were dominated up the middle, and the sheer strength of the forwards played a big part in those games, but it was more worrying how the skill level just isn't in the same ball park. Constantly undone just by the right pass, to the right man, in the right position. It was very strange to watch how relaxed and aware all those players looked, and each knew exactly what was the right option to take. After the poor Saints kick, look at how calmly the Roosters player handed the ball on to his team mate - just a complete knowledge and awareness of what to do in that situation.
I really hope all of the British game was watching with a pencil and paper, as embarrassing as it was for Super League, we really need to take note, learn, and aspire to be as good as that. Whatever it takes, the game over here needs re-evaluating.

The big difference is the number of options that they create when taking the ball to the line.
Over here, teams put a move on the opposition where a certain player is being set up to go through a gap, yet the Aussies seem to have 2 or 3 options, which of course makes defending so much more difficult.

| I agree, the options they have create holes, a let of their tries, not just WCS but in the NRL in general aren't reliant on braking a tackle or a piece of brilliance. Whilst I personally prefer to see someone like Watkins do something freakish, the Aussies can do that and rely on putting a backrower through a gap.

What a load of self righteous tosh, not that I condone that type of violence but it happens on a rugby pitch especially after your throw your fist (open or closed) to an oppositions jaw. Mitch was square infront of his face, you cant hit someone and then complain if you get hit back.
Then to go on a rant about how this sort of thing would ever happen in the NRL stinks of arrogance, the guy threw a hand at him Mitch saw it and in the heat of the moment gave a dig back.

| Quote wrencat1873="wrencat1873"What is difficult to grasp here is the "justification" for Garbutt's punch.
Tamou gave the Leeds player a tap, to show him that he wasn't happy with what had gone on in the tackle and
Garbutt decided to intervene, totally unnecessary and he'll cop a few games out for his effort, it was a decent shot though.
The over analysis by some posters is just plain ridiculous.
Galloway is more than capable of defending himself so, Garbutt shouldn't have and didn't need to get involved.
'"
Shame same can't be said of Tamou!!

If it had been the other way round with someone like Danny McGuire floored you'd all be creaming your knickers, or in the case of Wigan fans, be hoping his career was over.
Tamou thinks he's a hard man but just like Fielden, he's clearly not. He got what he deserved TBH.
They might not throw punches any more down under but there's more niggle in their game than ever. High shots, elbows, shoulders and lots of comedy slapping..
If you want to laugh even more at Tamou just take a look at 2015 State of Origin fights on that video site that everyone loves. Should change his name to Slappy.

No "they" haven't complained and don't have an issue with it. One player gobbed off to a few reporters and I can guarantee that if they hadn't outlawed punching in the NRL then Tamou would've thrown the first punch before getting floored.
All this mock outrage to stir something up on the internet is embarrassing. I bet 99% of you were cheering when it happened.
FFS the NQL coach even joked about it.

Spot on, they'd be no condemnation of the Cowboy player who floored him on here, only congratulations.
Seem to recall people mostly thanking Radford for striking Bailey a few times when he wasn't in a position to defend himself.
Load of faux outrage hypocrites on here.

| Probably the funniest thing with these incidents is how they get reported in a certain way on here despite video evidence to the contrary. Radford-Bailey was a classic, as was Brian McDermott supposedly knocking out the entire Leeds pack once. Both incidents can be seen on the site that shall not be named and are literally nothing like what some people represent them to be.
As for Garbutt's punch, I think Tamou wasn't expecting it or really looking his way, as he's used to a bit of niggle not resulting in anything.

To be fair to the Aussie lad, i wouldn't (and maybe he wouldn't) had any problem with a fight between Galloway and the Aussie breaking out...i enjoy a good punch up at the rugby, it adds to the occasion and gets everyone excited. I think it should just be an automatic sinbin for the pair if two fight each other and let them come back on, i don't like red cards dished out for fights.
But for Garbutt, he wasn't actually involved and took the Aussie by surprise with that dig; that's not on and probably deserved a red. as do houses who run in from the side to belt someone unawares when they're fighting someone else.
But like you say, it's a bit of a silly complaint. These are big men and can take it, there doesn't need to be spoken digs about it after the piece.

You've been very busy looking into his past but, what's any of that got to do with Garbutt belting him at the weekend ?
It's not like Leeds have always been a team of angels is it ?

That punching is a part of the game, always has been. Even in the NRL where nobody would ever punch anyone, you can see that exact player doing so within the last year and all this handwringing and screams of wont somebody think of the children are pretty silly.
Prop punches prop who struck team-mate, isnt a headline that should shock anyone who has seen a game of RL before.
(and i can only guess what those with the most extreme reaction towards Garbutts punch could think about a couple of those, especially the first one)

Nothing, but it puts all this "NRL players are angels" rubbish into perspective and shows Tamou up for the grub he's always been doesn't it?
Garbutt's got his ban and been made to make a public apology, which was just embarrassing for something we've all seen 1000 times before but I'd like to think he'd do it again TBH when the next grub wants to play the hard man. Jamie Peacock would've done exactly the same thing if he was still playing as would 1 or 2 players at most other clubs.

TBH I don't get what all the fuss is about. So someone in a hard physical contact sport punched an opposition player. I don't see why there is a big fuss. There is a video of when one of my own teams players knocked out a player from the Queensland touring side in the 80s and that is revered by Hull KR Fans.

| That was a brutal game. Broadhurst was hard but I don't remember him going around decking people, so something must have happened earlier?
The only one they lost as well. My own side Leeds were a complete rabble when we played them, and we lost 58-2.

I don't think anyone has suggested they are angels; but it's a fact that following the NRL making a closed-fist punch an automatic red card, the incidence of striking has dramatically reduced. What you tend to get now is a bit of pushing and shoving with maybe heads together like rutting stags - but no punches thrown.
With this incident, there is no doubt a blow was delivered first by Tamou - an open-handed, clip round the ear - but a blow nonetheless; Galloway would probably have responded in kind, and it would have ended with a telling off from the ref; Garbutt escalated it quickly with a needless and totally disproportionate right hook, which sat Tamou on his backside, such was the force involved. The ref had no choice but to send him off and he deserves a ban, not least for his own stupidity.
