| Well I researched the tours last night and found out they cost about two and half grand and you'll likely get left behind without a hotel room Definately going to do it independantly with those costs.
One of our group has been backpacking around aussie/NZ and thinks the hostels will do the trick at a tenner a night. I'd like to get it planned with costs but i'd be doing it blind until venues are announced.
Out of interest, how much would a 15 to 18 year old jap estate car cost over in australia? If it's taxed, that's 3rd party insurance right?

| Mate, hostels over here are sh*t. You'll get all your stuff stolen the first night, and that will be the high point.
I'd never even consider staying in one.
Think it will cost you a fair bit on the car and the fact is, with the way they will spread games around, you will find its a pain anyway.
Flights between cities in Australia are VERY cheap and once you are in a city , the trains don't cost much at all.

| 2006 we went to oz and new zealand for holidays, we got lucky as the tri nations were anounced a few weeks after we had booked our flights as we was out there, we went to matches indepenantly, a lot cheaper than some of these supporters tours
(though it does help staying with family in brisbane )

| The car is a little worrying as could lose a fair bit and i'll likely have to take my spanners. It's a pain driving 12 hours brisbane to sydney etc but we'd get to see all sorts on the road trip...great experience.
I'll have a look at the cost of internal flights tonight to gain a better comparison.
OK, hostels are probably a no go then. What is the budget hotel brands over there? I'm guessing you have Holiday Inn as they are multinational, any others?
Thanks
Nick

| Get on Wotif to give you an idea of hotel prices. Top end you can get for around $180 a night, decent around $140 and el cheapo but still ok around $90 a night. Most cities are more expensive on a weekend and cheaper in teh wekk except Perth which is the other way around!
Flights are anywhere between $200-600 one way depending on where you are going. Unlike UK the later you leave it to book an internal flight the more expensive the flight gets so don't leave it till last minute thinking you'll get a bargain! Main airlines are Qantas, Virgin and Jetstar.
I'd wait till it is confirmed as you know how they change their minds re Int RL schedules!

| As far as a car goes instead of buying one test out the hire rates.
I hired one in 1999 for the Tri Nations to go between Surfers and Brisbane.
Admit not far by Aussie distances but a good car and you'd be ok. Petrol is, or was, cheap.
