His mistake was saying it was Zak’s last chance when he signed in May. He’s now on his second last chance before he’s even played a game.
The clear message to Zak and all the other players is that Leneghan doesn’t mean what he says.
They are doing the right thing sending him to rehab. I bet Leneghan hasn’t looked into the chances of successfully rehabilitating an alcoholic under the age of 30 though (spoiler alert - it’s a very low success rate).
There’s a bit of naivety in terms of when he comes out of rehab. I’m not sure what qualifications or experience Steve McCormak has working with addicts who have mental health problems, but I doubt he has the expertise needed to support Zak in continuing his rehabilitation.

Well it’s a good job the most successful rugby league team of all time aren’t employing Steve Mcormak(sic) to aid his rehabilitation isn’t it

Erm, Wigan’s statement today suggests he will be heavily involved in his role as Player Welfare Manager.

Whilst all the time, the big black cloud that is Zak Hardaker hangs over the club, waiting to self-destruct at any given moment.
I’m afraid “Lenners” has already fallen into the trap of giving Hardaker more than one last chance. He’s done it on the naive belief that Zak will change and it’s understandable given his on-field ability. The trouble is that the chances of Hardaker changing are remote.

What makes you think he isn't including Wigan in that comment? Either way don't you think that SOME of the blame lies with previous clubs if he feels it was something that should already have been dealt with? I can't really see your objection to this comment except as a 'it's not our fault guv!' type of hand washing exercise.

As I see it there are only 2 schools of thought. Firstly that it's all his own fault and no club, previous or current, is to blame or secondly that the clubs have a duty of care and should do all in their power to help. This is IL's published opinion and, as such, the 'could/should have already been addressed' is surely fair comment?

No it’s a tactic designed purely to spin the story toward “Wigan does right by its people, other clubs don’t” instead of “Wigan retain Hardaker despite previously saying it’s his last chance and are only doing it because he’s a good player”.

I don’t really have a problem with Wigan not sacking him. But if that’s the case then Lenagan shouldn’t have said previously it’s his last chance if he’s not prepared to sack him when something happens and Lenagan shouldn’t be criticising other clubs without evidence for it.

Let's face it, you can read what you want into practically anything but if we stick to what was actually said it includes Wigan as it merely says that it could have been addressed before now and we signed him months ago.

Spot on. It’s the same kind of spin he used when signing him originally boasting of how good their club is with player welfare etc. and that blew up in his face with this latest incident.

Wonder why they didn’t send Joel Tomkins to rehab for drinking.

Maybe it was the alleged bribe to keep the video from surfacing, or maybe he refused offer of help. Who really knows but it makes you wonder, same with Sam signing for Catalans.

Joel's form was pretty average since he came from rugby union. I think Wigan saw it as an opportunity to move him on to be honest.

Why does he still persist with these “I’ve changed, things will be different this time” interviews? Just keep quiet and get on with things quietly and if he has changed then we’ll see that over time.

We have heard it all before from him, same old b****x. No nobody believes him, Wigan only did not sack him as they would have lost face after claiming other clubs had not given him support.
He is a serial a***hole, 12-18 months nax before he is in bother again.

Happy to read a full page RL-related piece over a coffee this morn even if it was same old, same old from Zak. Better than some tedious piece on Jurgen Klopp's impact on English football, netball, or a discussion about England's likely 6 nations shortcomings which is the usual fare.

Nothing in there we’ve not heard before. Hopefully he’s telling the truth this time. I’m wary because of the numerous times he’s said this before and I don’t like the introduction by him of ADHD. He says he’s not using it as an excuse for his actions but why bring it up in that interview if he’s not at least trying to use it to mitigate them.

So, meh. Let’s see.

I hope things work out for him. For the vast majoriy if the time, he’s a really nice bloke who is liked by everyone he meets. He’s got time for everyone, spends ages doing autographs and talking to supporters etc.
I have some sympathy with him with the cards life has dealt him, but it’s always hard to work out what is a result of his mental health difficulties and what is just straightforward idiocy.
Wigan are taking a massive risk with him. His defence at his UKAD hearing was that his mental health issues impair his decision making. That’s not a good trait for a professional sportsman!
I’m pretty sure Zak genuinely believes what he says himself. He doesn’t wake up in the morning and decide to go out an assault students, get smashed on international duty, get hammered the night before a game, take class A or go out drink driving. His problem is that when he’s faced with a decision, he makes the wrong choice in the moment. Whether that’s a result of the impulsive behaviour that’s a trait of ADHD or whether it’s simple stupidity, nobody knows. But the real test will come when he’s put in a situation where he has to make a decision that goes against his impulsiveness. Can he develop the attribute of self-control that would have stopped him getting into all the situations he has created in the past? Or, as before, will he react without thinking of the consequences until it’s too late? Who knows.
I don’t think the chances are good to be honest. He can’t medicate for his ADHD like most people who suffer from the condition. Statistically, young men with alcohol problems are the least like to be successfully rehabilitated because access to alcohol is so easy. Whilst he has moved to Wigan, it seems he is also still spending a lot of time with his old group of idiotic mates who are a negative influence on his behaviour.
As I say, I hope he gets his life on track. Player welfare is more important than club rivalry. I just don’t fancy his chances......

Ah yeah you're right because a flare up between a couple of team mates really is on the same level as homophobia towards an official, beating a defenceless student to a pulp, missing a curfew on international duty, snorting lines on a casual Tuesday and drink driving. And that's all what we know about.
