Regarding listening to what they ask, asking the VR to "check the grounding" is passing the book.

The on field ref should say, for example, I think Tomkins has grounded that ball before he is in touch. Can you tell me otherwise.

Then if the VR says, well actually Richard, his foot is in touch.

Then the on field ref has had his decision proved wrong.

Quote: ScottHKR "Did you read the petition? There were plenty of suggestions in there.

This is what was there

I think I disagree with just about every point there, which is good work from both of us

* Forward passes to be looked at on the video screen - technology is advanced enough to be able to have moveable lines on a screen to check where a ball was passed and caught.
www.youtube.com/watch?v

* Two referees - a system tried and tested in the NRL
The biggest problem with refereeing in RL for me is the inconsistency of the officials from week to week, but at least they are generally consistent within any individual game. Adding two referees would make rule enforcement inconsistent even within any single match

* Changes to video ref system - asking the video ref to prove the decision wrong, rather than to make it. Having multiple video refs/consultants
Like in the cricket where it has proved faultless?

* More responsibility on linesmen
I actually agree with this one, althoguh we should remember that in general touch-judges are less qualified and experienced than referees

* Using the sin bin correctly, and not putting players on report as a cop out
Agree 100%, a report should be for when the incident was not seen only

In general we have to accept that referees are human and make mistakes, but on the whole I would say Super League referees are pretty good. I have the advantage of watching SL games as a neutral and I very rarely finish a game thinking that the ref had a stinker, and never do it think they were bias. When you are supporting one team you are always going to sway one way. Of course there are odd occasions where a refereeing decision right at the end of a game may or may not have cost a team a win but these are a lot less frequent than when a dropped ball bombs a match winning chance, or a missed tackle lets a team win, should we start a petition to improve handling and tackling technique?

Quote: MOT "If you look on the Hull KR website you will actually see some fans of the club biking to headingley from Craven Park on Friday raising money for charity. Yes all clubs have a minority of idiots but some hard workers as well'"

Motorised transport is at a premium over in East Hull... icon_wink.gif

Good on the HKR fans involved, hope they raise plenty for their chosen charity

Oh and ScottHKR, give up mate, you appear to be having around a 0.001% sucess rate around the forums for your petition, however if you are trying to boost your number of posts then crack on.

He's signed it at least twice, his first comments are the best.

A TJ's job is, first and foremost, to rule on touch and touch in-goal. Anything else is only advisory to the referee. In addition, today's TJ's are wired up using the communication system. Yes, hand and flag signals are used in the lower leagues and away from the television cameras, but that doesn't mean SL touch judges don't give input to the referee.

Non televised Super League matches are all recorded by RFL representatives, and the match official's audio is recorded alongside it. If you ever get the chance to view one of these recordings, you'll then understand just how much the referee and TJ's communicate with each other.

I thought the on-report system was fairly explained by Steve Ganson in last week's Boots 'n' All. In the case of the Catalan player of Gareth O'Brien, it was used because the officials were unsure of the point of contact on O'Brien. Had Ben Thaler sent the Catalan player off, he would then have to describe the point of contact in his dismissal report which would be used in the disciplinary process.

Like a barrister in a court of law, every tiny detail is picked out at RFL disciplinary hearings by the defense. So if Thaler had said in his report, "the Catalan player deliberately made contact with his elbow on O'Brien's head" when on the video it is clear he deliberately used his forearm, the Catalan player would get off scott-free because the report was not accurate.

By placing the incident on report, it ensures the incident is looked at in Leeds by the Match Review Panel, and the guilty player is more likely to get a suspension for his actions and it doesn't question the integrity of the match officials.
