The director might have been better served just making up the amount of gate money taken to the average, rather than giving a specific £10 per ticket. Seeing as (pretty certainly) more tickets are going to be sold it wouldn't cost as much (might cost nothing, with luck) and he would certainly be able to continue doing it for longer.
