If you're sat comfortably at the top of the table and you have to lose a couple of points, it's much better losing them to a club at the bottom of the table, rather than you're rivals in the top half of the table.

When you are top of the league throwing away an 18 point half time lead and in fact shipping 32 points in the second half at home is an ideal result. In fact electing to kick a penalty when you are leading the game quite comfortably at home against a team that couldn't be further down the table from you when you are camped on the other teams line after the 4th consecuative set is precisely the sort of confident decision I'd want to see if I were a Wigan fan.
