| Awesome start to the season really. Too early to get too excited and I think tonight emphasises how important keeping 16 of those 17 on the field is going to be.
1 - Lomax 7 Did well, lots of ugly but important work done tonight and solid on the few occasions he had to defend
2 - Swift 8 Excellent. Moves like silk and made a couple of absolutely brilliant calls tonight when exposed by Percival
3 - Percival 6 Looks exciting with the ball and gives us the balance with Turner on the other side that gives us the option to go wide early, which we've not had in years. But he's suspect defensively. We perhaps need to look at the options in the back row to protect him out there?
4 - Turner 9 My motivational posts are working. He went well tonight and his side looked rock solid, brilliant move to get on the outside and pop the pass to Makinson.
5 - Makinson 8 Classy
6 - Wheeler 9 He's a fat, useless waste of space who shouldn't have a contrac...... no hang on, that was last week. He's got the moves, looked very dangerous running with the ball and defended really well, throwing himself in front of the truck a few times to try tries. Fingers crossed he can stay fit and get into good physical condition (A stone overweight at the moment?)
7 - Walsh 10 Couldn't have asked for a better debut, bar the couple of funny air passes. Kicking was good, the 408 - Amor 9 Wow. Love him already. He has it all, hard working, aggressive and has that all important factor, an iconic appearance. Oscar the grouch could quickly become a legend at Saints.
9 - Roby 8 Ultra important we keep him fit.
10 - Walmsley 8 Ran the ball brilliantly, making Waterhouse and Westwood eat grass through their bum cheeks several times and tackled really well. But has to focus on playing the ball properly. It's so frustrating to see him coughing up field position by not putting enough effort into playing it correctly, eyes on the ball rather than the collision too young man.
11 - Manu 7 Worked hard and was unlucky to not get a penalty for an obvious steal early doors
12 - Wilkin 6 Strangely it was the stuff he did so well last season that hampered him tonight, throwing wild passes about at times and coughed up a couple of penalties.
13 - LMS 8 Looked superb, playing with the aggression and enthusiasm he played with at times last season, but didn't seen to play many minutes, not sure if that's a strategy or injury?
14 - Jones 6 Solid
15 - Laffranchi 6 Hard to tell, I didn't notice him at all bar his try. I'd like to see his stats?
16 - Soliola 6 Struggled at times, but is coming back from an injury so is probably a week or two behind the rest. Still worked hard with good enthusiasm to get off the line but could well be sitting next week out if he's not lucky
17 - Wellens 5 Tonight just adds to the head scratching. 63/64 minutes gone and game over when he made an appearance? We won that game with 16 players, would it not make more sense to have Flanagan or Beaumont in that spot? I felt for Wello when he ran lead the team out, the slunk away to the side and tried to back slap the first few players, none of whom noticed him, then he moved nervously to the bench, like a geek with no social skills at a party no one wants him to be at.

| Typical Saddened, head in the clouds after just 1 game. It was only Warrington we were playing.
6's all round with a 7 for Roby!

| I actually thought Turner and Manu where our worst players tonight. Apart from the great pass from Turner for the try he made 5 individual errors with ball in hand and gave away 2 silly penalties after good kick chases from Saints. Manu takes the ball in standing still (i think he is being used wrongly) and to me he looks like his going to loose the ball on every drive he takes in.
The rest where all superb.

I didn't see it like that, but I did have a few trips to the bar and toilets. I can only remember the one knock on late on, but seeing as it's Turner, we'll go with your version and give him a 4.

| To early for 8's and 9's.
Maybe an 8.5 for Walsh.
But a good way to get the early Wellens bash in. Although I do agree on this occasion.

| Manu needs to be used on the left side. He's a left side second row and plays very well when he's there. I've never seen him have a good game at Loose Forward or right side Second Row and I've rarely seen him have a bad game on the left. He's game is based on his left foot step and right hand fend, he can't use that on the right.

| I think Manu would be much more effective in the left too. I thought Turner was a bit ropey tonight, couple of penalties and errors, despite his flick pass assist (Not going having a go, because everyone has an off game). There wasn't much point in Wello being on the bench either, may as we'll have put. Beaumont/Richards/Greenwood/Flanagan/Walker/Thompson there to spell the forwards a bit more. Walsh looks a great signing, did he even get tackled tonight?
All in all, a good first performance. We looked a bit scrappy at times, but can't really grumble!

Pah, what's with all the negativity on here? We skittled Warrington early doors today, the application and attitude was spot on. Sure there was the odd knock on here and there, but on the whole it was a cracking opening salvo.

| I know it's only round 1 but I think Walsh could prove to be exactly what we've been missing. He controlled everything and his kicking was superb. He's also a cheeky little bugger who has instantly endeared himself to all of us.
For me the biggest plus of the night was Wheeler. It's probably the biggest if of all time but IF he can stay fit and repeat performances like tonight then he could be awesome for us. Him and Walsh would be a perfect combo if they can stay on the field together.

| I pretty much agree with everything Saddo writes. Except I'm not wilfully cruel about Wellens, who I've always had a soft spot for since he posed for a photo with my missus in Pimbletts in the town centre. He did seem a bit of a pointless bench space. Probably better to have had another forward, or a spell hooker for Roby.
So pleased to see Wheeler do well and get through a whole game.
Thought Amor, LMS and Walmsley were far and away the best three forwards on the pitch, and utterly demolished the Warrington pack.
Mostly though, Walsh. Just Walsh. That lad is going to be a proper Saints hero. I'm not sure I believe he's only 26, as he looks older than me, but if he can maintain that form for the next 5 years, he's going to be the centrepiece of a new Saints hegemony.

| Let's not get overexcited. We beat a team who were rudderless and had zero bench depth.
That said, Walsh and Wheeler were outstanding. Two massive plus points. If they can stay fit, they could be the best halfback pairing in the league.
As someone who doesn't rate Swift, he impressed me tonight. However, we cannot persist with Swift and Percival on the same side otherwise we will get torn to pieces.
Manu, as usual, was poor.
Also not convinced by Amor and Walmsley starting. They are our best two props by far. I think one should be used from the bench, as if we come up against a side with a strong bench, we need that impact they can give.

You can only play what's in front of you
I actually think starting with Amor and Walmsley went better than expected, having masoe to bring on will help against bigger benches, with laffranchi adding the "steady Eddie" element.
Swift took his chance well, and generally chased back well and ran it in hard - I still have a question mark Percival vs jones - Percival certainly offered more of a threat in attack, but jones is much stronger in defence.
Agreed Manu had a sloppy game and I was slightly disappointed from him, hopefully he's just a slow starter.
