I don't doubt the truth in this, but it's hardly a signing to excite the fans. Gone are those days when we'd sign Jamie Lyon, Leon Pryce, Darren Albert and the likes, now we get Howarth and winger from Huddersfield with only 2 appearances to his name.

I'm hoping it's a case of Brown recognising the importance of signing halves and props and looking to funnel funds into this area. In the modern game spending big on a winger is a luxury, if you've got nobody in the middle to lay the platform and supply the ball, it's pointless to have a world class winger.

I'm also hoping it's a case of Brown raiding his old club for a hidden gem. Does this mean both Meli and Gardner will be leaving, with Dawson and Makinson as our first choice wingers?

Meli has been offered a good deal by Salford, in my opinion I think he'll be there next year, along with Puletua.

Gardner has had talks recently but I'm unsure on the outcome or whether they still ongoing.

I'd be surprised to see Puletua anywhere other than Saints, but him and Meli seem the kind of players Salford are after. Last hurrah types after one last big pay day. I don't think offering Gardner a new deal is the way forward, I'd be going with Makinson and Swift/Dawson on the wings next year. I know I've just bagged the signing of Dawson, but it must be a defensive improvement on Gardner.

I don't know much about Dawson but apparently he's a typical Brown type player. He's big, at 95kg and reportedly very quick.

Only two things concern me about this signing: the injury that apparently entailed a doctor defying return, and whether he would usurp Makinson who (as everyone knows) I believe is worth a starting spot, preferably on the left wing with Percy and Manu.
