Cant get to the game tonight so I have tuned in to Radio Merseyside. The game has not yet started and I am thinking of turning off. The reason is Ray French; if he has said er once he has said it a hundred times in less than four minutes. Example; the subs are Paul er Clough; Andrew er Dixon etc etc etc. The man is a disgrace and should be retired with immediate effect. Who else is there to take over from the clown.

his commentary was absolutely appalling, he didn't even know the names of half of them. I had to tune in to Merseyside as Radio Leeds had gone off for football, but I wish I ddin't with this man

I love Ray French commentary. I remember a couple of seasons ago we were playing Wakefield away and his commentary had me rolling round the floor.

"It's Wakefield with the ball er, Paul Wellens, er, the ball near the touchline. He moves it to Snitch, no it's Mathers (Could have been anyone, can't remember) who came from the Queens Amateur Club, er, it's pushed forward, they're in here.... [Extended pause, crowd noise] No, just short, good tackle, Saints are in down the right with Flannery, he's in, Meli's over."

You just have no idea who has the ball or which section of the pitch the ball is in.

Ah the memories. Many a time screaming 'I can't see it Ray!!' when he says something like 'ohhhh! A knock on, oh dear...' then goes off on a tangent so you have no idea who even have the ball, never mind who knocked on.

I think he must confuse the TV games with radio ones. Man's a legend.

Soap box of mine but he and the other clown Rooney do more to discredit our game than anyone. The pair of them, whilst I am sure they are great blokes, are an utter embarrassment and inhibit new listeners or fans.

French, as mentioned, can't remember players names or go more than 5 seconds without uttering 'Er'.

Rooney cannot speak English. What does 'lickle', 'luke' and 'ooter mean on local/national broadcasts? Fine, they are colloquialisms and locals associate with that speak but he is the voice of RL for goodness sakes. I know people who have listened to his commentary and had to turn it off; such was the degree of cringe worthiness.

Amateurs the pair of them. Get rid.

i'm surprised he has even started to get peoples names right, at one point he was struggling with thier nationality, IIRC he once said "here he comes the big number 8 the kiwi forward" and it was Paul Anderson. work that one out?

Player or Commentator there comes a time when you stand down and accept you have had you day! that is the case for Ray and should have been a season or two ago, same with Alan Rooney!

You're bang on! On the Wakefield commentary last week he even introduced himself as 'Ray er French'! I find it excrutiating listening to him. I'd rather listen to a Yorkshire station broadcasting their partisan commentary than put up with the chuckle brothers!

I was lucky enough to have Ray as both a teacher and coach. His renditions of Shakespeare and Chaucer written in "ye olde inglish" were hilarious. Some of his Quotes still live with me now some 35 years on.
