Can anybody let me know of the best way to get to the game on Sunday from Liverpool? Just looking at trainline.com, it tries to book me onto a bus which takes over an hour and does not offer any trains which I know on a weekday take roughly 25 minutes.

You can't get a train from Liverpool to St Helens on a weekend for some reason; pain for me being a student living in Liverpool!
You will either have to get the coach replacement for the train or get the 10 or 10A arriva bus - not sure on their sunday timetable though I'm afraid.

They are doing weekend engineering works to upgrade the railway line between Liverpool and Wigan so it is fully electrified. Hence lack of weekend services via St.Helens Central
You could always check out train services to Lea Green station in St.helens which is on the Liverpool to Manchester main line. This station is about 30 mins walk from the ground , or alternatively you can hop on the bus into the town centre of St.Helens

I think both lines are shut, to junction and central. No option other than a bus or a lift.

Dont get the bus replacement it takes ages longer as it calls at the rail stations along the way. Go for the 10. The bus stops are only about 100 yards from the main entrance to Lime Street station. Langtee Park is only a 10 minute stroll from the town centre terminus.
As above the weekend trains are off until May 2012 due to engineering works on both lines.

Just who came up with this kick off time? What is that all about? I had it down as being Friday, then someone told me it wasn't so I thought Saturday. Now I find it's at 6.35pm on Sunday??? WTF?

Borrow a push bike with some lights and you will be there in around about 1/2 hour.
