there seems to be some puzzlement in our house with that try.My wife said that should have been an 8 point try, a conversion for the try then another under the post as in a penalty for a bad tackle ect.ect. my son said that was done away with quite awhile now, me i know it did happen at some time.I think i have got a vid/dvd of that match sometime in the 80s in my libary at Central Park.Will root it out & look at it seeing there is nothing to watch only well only.Most of the rules i know but some come & go without me noticing just watch the match shout at this & that & enjoy the atmosphere

The 8 point try is where the foul is committed in the act of scoring the try, if I remember rightly.

The Thurston tackle couldn't be considered to have happened 'in the act of scoring', IMO.

It has to be after the ball is grounded, that's why Raynors attack to Sam Tomkins head wasn't given in the cup match even though Tomkins was over the line.

an '8' pointer is a penalty given after the ball is grounded.

Catalans got one in their 'scrawpy' 22-16 victory in the CC against Leigh this year.

We got one a few years ago at KR against Wakefield. When Solomona tackled our scorer after he had grounded the ball.

The only penalty try that I have seen awarded against Saints was at Warrington a few years ago when Graham Liptrot was deemed to have obstructed Des Drummond after he had scored a try.

I remember the very first penalty try, it was given by a French ref live on the BBC, it wasn't in the rule book at the time, went in the following season.

Regarding the England match. I was a little suprised when they gave the try. Justified by the spirit of the game, perhaps, but not to the letter of the law imo.
