Article from the Press Association.

www.sportinglife.com/rugbyleague ... olumn.html

Former St Helens and Hull full-back Steve Prescott must be one of the most inspirational figures in the history of rugby league.

But although the former England and Ireland international tackled hard and scored tries aplenty before his career was cut short by injury in 2003, it is not for deeds on the field that the 35-year-old continues to amaze.

Prescott has been battling a rare form of stomach cancer since 2006 and, after initially being given just six months to live, has fought with all the courage he showed on the pitch and more.

Yet Prescott is not only concerned about his own health and is currently preparing to embark on a monumental triathlon challenge to raise money for charities to help others.

Cycling more than 800 miles from Perpignan to Windsor Castle, paddling 24 miles down the Thames in a dragon boat and then running a half marathon in London would test the fittest of athletes, but Prescott is not letting that put him off.

Prescott sets off from the south of France this weekend along with a team of ex-players and businessmen in the hope of raising £100,000 and reaching Wembley in time for the Challenge Cup final on August 29.

"A lot of people have said good luck and I think I'm going to need it," Prescott said. "I feel a little under-prepared but I'm sure the character of the lads, and what we are doing it for, will pull us through.

"I'm sure most of them are ready, they've done a lot of training in the last six months, but it's been quite difficult for myself.

"I was having treatment until the end of April, chemotherapy, so getting over that and getting my body physically fit again after having it broken down - it took a while to get motivated and get into the swing of things.

"But I am a lot better than I was and have been training quite hard, although I am still a bit nervous that I might be a bit underdone."

There will be little time for Prescott to ease himself in with the group hitting the mountains early into their 13-day route.

"I think the first few days will be very competitive," Prescott said. "I can see a lot of them racing each other but I'm sure after climbing a few mountains things will settle down.

"On the third day I think we've got an 18-mile climb, that will sort the men from the boys.

"The overall amount of climbing is double Everest, that's pretty frightening."

The original trek, conceived by Prescott's friend and former Warrington and Swinton player Paul Barrow, was even more challenging with plans to row across the English Channel.

They had to be scrapped due to difficulties obtaining permission from French authorities but have not been shelved for good.

Prescott said: "Paul does a lot of rowing in the gym and thought about rowing the Channel. The idea grew from there.

"It went from rowing the Channel to cycling the whole of France as well and then adding a run in.

"We're disappointed we're not allowed to row the Channel but it might have done us a favour. I think we will probably need to train for a full year for that so maybe we should wait."

Paul Sculthorpe, Chris Joynt, Anthony Sullivan, Steve Hampson, Gary Connolly, Chris Smith, Steve Hall and Lee Jackson are among the former rugby league players joining Prescott in his challenge. Another 10 people have also joined the team for the adventure, all paying their own expenses.

Money is being raised through the Steve Prescott Foundation and proceeds will be split between Christie's Cancer Hospital in Manchester and Try Assist, formerly the Rugby League Benevolent Fund.

"When you can see the difference it makes you think it is all worthwhile," said Prescott, who has also run the London Marathon, organised a boxing event and completed two sponsored walks in his fund-raising attempts.

It is something Prescott hopes to be able to continue with, providing his condition remains stable.

"We will have re-evaluate each year what I can do," he said. "I'm going to keep doing challenges and keep going for as long as I can.

"I'm just living by scans, it is not worth thinking beyond that.

"They have told me it is a terminal disease I'll never get rid of.

"It is a matter of living for today and for each three-six month scan. I can't look too far ahead."

This is Mike Denning (SPF Chairmans Blog)

Here it goes

DAY ONE

We all met at Liverpool Airport. Everybody in great spirits. Plane on Time and Ryanair gave us kind permission to board first and have our group photo taken in front of Plane. Good banter on way over and the Roomies where sorted. I thought I had drawn the short straw being paired with Thatto Heaths own Domino King (self appointed) Hugh Denning but Lee Jackson got John Kilgannon. Unlucky!

Upon arrival we alighted to what I thought was extreme heat from one of the engines. By the time I had reached the Terminal Building I was in a pool of Water and the Temp Gauge in Airport read 35 degrees. Ouch this is going to hurt.

After unloading at Hotel we all went together for a group meal and we where joined by Christophe Levy the General Manager of Catalan Dragons. A couple of glasses of wine and short speech from yours truly and an early night.

DAY TWO.

Bags down at reception for 5.30, breakfast at 6.00 and on road for 7.00am. A few late stragglers were duly fined by the fines master Chris Smith.

The first days ride was to go from Stade Gilbert to Carcassonne. 68 miles. Didn't start to well as the Sat Nav didn't pick up stadium and what should have taken 10 minutes was more like 30. After pictures at Catalans Ground we headed for Carcassonne. The scenery was breathtaking but the first day was extremely tough. The heat of the day was highest around 2.00pm at approximately 42 degrees. The heat coupled with some further errors on directions and three credible climbs resulted in a finish at around 3.30 and 81 miles achieved. Everybody home safe. A very quiet night in a lovely City.

DAY TWO

The alarm went at 5.00am. I tried to launch it and my snoring father through the window. I felt like I had been hit by Big Maurie> Not a bone was not aching or muscle sore to touch. Breakfast at 6.00 am on day two started a little later than planned at 6.45 with a 98 mile trip to Montauban. We had spilt into three groups today to make managing the support easier. Chris Joynt assisted with Group Three and did a tremendous job in bringing everybody home. 6 Hours 20 minutes in the saddle. I am standing up as I type this. I believe at this stage even Bob Hope wouldn't have done this for Charity!

Off for Dinner now. Mountain Climbing tomorrow over 65 miles. Oh Joy!

DAY THREE Chairmans Log

Off for Dinner now. Mountain Climbing tomorrow over 65 miles. Oh Joy!

DAY FOUR

Montauban to Sarlat La Caneda 75.3 Miles

Another tough day in the saddle. 6.45am start. I was sent off with my group consisting of Chris Smith, Jimmy Rothwell, Chris Joynt, Steve Prescott, Barry Ford and Richard Blowman. My fellow athletes helped me over the Mountains today in temperatures which only mad men would be out in. 44 Degrees at worst. This was by far the toughest day so far with the Climbing and heat but everybody returned home safe if not a little saddle sore.

At this point I do feel like half man half Bike.

Preccy is in good form and the Team work is fantastic.

Here are some facts and reasons why you should be supporting our cause!

We have climbed over 24,000 foot in 4 days and used over 6,000 calories on a daily basis.

Fantastic effort by all concerned. Well done to all the lads.

The BBC even showed a bit of the arrival live! (It's always a bit of a shock when the BBC show something to do with RL live ...)

This article was by Carnegie Challenge team mate and Sunday Mirror Journalist David Burke.

NEVER has the match ball for the Rugby League Challenge Cup final endured such an arduous journey!
Steve Prescott, the former St Helens, Wakefield and Hull international full back, delivered the ball for yesterday’s showpiece after an 900 mile bike ride from Perpignan, 24 mile dragon boat paddle up the River Thames and a half marathon from Uxbridge to Wembley.
“Stevie Wonder,” diagnosed with terminal stomach cancer three years, remarkably completed every mile of the gruelling two week trek and deserved all the cheers when he completed a triumphant lap of honour at half-time with his band of intrepid adventurers.
Even searing 110 degree plus temperatures, 5am breakfast calls, 48,000 feet of tortuous climbs and crashes, which left ex Great Britain stars Gary Connolly and Lee Jackson nursing cuts and bruises, could not deter Steve and his pals.
There’s no denying it wasn’t a gruelling trip with many of the hill climbs used in the Tour de France.
There were plenty of laughs but not much partying – early nights at 10pm were the norm even for super-fit RL legends like former Great Britain stars Paul Sculthorpe, Chris Joynt, Anthony Sullivan, Steve Hampson, Connolly and Jackson.
Jimmy Gittins and Pete Stephenson, who were left paralysed after suffering broken necks playing amateur RL, deserve special praise – completing the trip on a specially adapted quad bike.
We averaged more than 80 miles a day on the bike including one marathon stint of 120 miles from Abbeville to Calais and then Dover to Ashford.
Then came the dragon boat paddle in atrocious conditions from Windsor Castle to Teddington Lock.
Torrential rain on the arduous seven hour paddle left most of the fund-raisers vowing never to sit inside a dragon boat again!
But at least we had a laugh with guest paddler Johnny Vegas, the St Helens born comedian, joining us on one leg on the Thames and entertaining the tow-path walkers and the crews with his slapstick humour.
The half-marathon yesterday drained the last ounce of energy from most of the group who expect to raise more than £100,000 for Christies Cancer Hospital in Manchester and the RFL Benevolent Fund, now known as Try Assist.
But the two week training camp left many of the 25-strong group boasting bodies like the professionals!
A customs officer at Dover was certainly impressed. He took a break from searching lorries with his sniffer dog to shout to us:”It’s all right lads I’m not looking for steroids!”
But the star of the show was Prekkie whose indomitable spirit continually lifted the group.
At the end of all 11 cycling days he even had the determination to push the pedals even faster shouting:”Sprint finish!” – and more often than not was up with the leaders!
What a trip and what a man!
