Tendons stretching from the palm of the hand pulling on the finger bones.

<fx: Really REALLY Pedantic> That isn't quite true </fx>
There are muscles in the fingers (arrectores pilorum, which control the movement of hair follicles), but you are right in that you wouldn't be able to strain them 'picking up a cup of tea' as they have no bearing on movement of the actual finger.
Anyway, back to goalkicking

So we've established that kicking can lead to injury. Good.

Yes, but so can walking down the street, getting into bed, falling on a marshmallow. The kicking itself didn't lead to 'long term injury' as suggested however, it merely aggravated a problem that was already present.
To suggest that kicking should be taken away from a fully fit player as it 'can lead to long term injuries' is as ludicrous as suggesting that a player shouldn't catch high balls for fear of hurting a finger.

| Im no Dr House, or Dr Phil for that matter, but surely just playing rugby is as bad for a dodgy groin as goal kicking is?

Not really - you can play with a groin injury depending on how severe it is but it can be uncomfortable. Kicking goals or even kicking in general play would be alot harder

1. Kicking doesn't just aggravate injury - it can cause it. To claim otherwise is senseless.
2. RL is a tough sport. Around this point in the season it's likely that most players are carrying some kind of knock.
3. To say Eastmond is integral to our title challenge is an understatement. Without him we stand very little chance of winning SL.
Taking the above into consideration I think it's not just prudent but absolutely ESSENTIAL that we try to minimise the load on Eastmond's young shoulders - physical and psychological - when an EQUAL alternative (in all parts of the game - not just kicking) presents itself. And Foster isn't just an equal alternative - he's BETTER. Props to Potter for realising this and giving the kid his chance. We are certainly the richer for it.

Except in goal line defence. He has some way to go in that area.
