Edwards was a long way from being a genius. He was a player with average skills, but with a determination and winners mentality that helped him eek out his full potential. He was also helped by playing in a dominant Wigan team that was full of full time professionals cherry picked from around the league, playing against teams with part time players.'"
No no no in the gospel according to Rogues (and most other deluded pie eaters) chapter 1 verse 2 that part of history never happened , Wigoon were playing on a level playing field at all times .... lmao

| Yes I think we should cheer and thank them for their time at the club. Personally I would have kept boh of them for another 2 years instead of signing the likes of fozzy.
The world has gone mad; sorry I meant to say we are skint.

Edwards (and Goodway) were far better players than Long and Gilmoor.
Look at Edwards record, unsurpassed.
He was a genius and is respected. Look at what he has done in RU.
Do you think Long will EVER be classed in the same league?
How many International caps have they won? Did Edwards ever bring the game into disrepute?
Did Long ever get near Edwards try scoring feats?'"
Exceptionally talented players very rarely make good coaches. It's the less talented players who have to work at the game that make the better coaches as they have to study the game to reach a high level.
Edwards is apparently a very good coach.
Back onto topic, both players need a great send off tonight, win or lose. They've been a massive part of an exceptional period for the club and deserve every plaudit.

Just shows how the standards have dropped.
But both have given Saints good service.'"
Anyone who thinks sean long was average knows nothing at all about rugby league.
I know the pies are bitter as they let him go and he's helped saints win every cup possible but even they know deep down that longy was true world class player and nobody can doubt that.
I think long was passed it 3yr ago but he's still the best big match winner in super league.
IMO he's 1 of the best match winners to play rugby league.
Love him or hate him but you can never say he's been average!

| Getting back to the original thread!!
Gilly for me has been a unsung hero at Saints- the amount of head shots he has received in his time is unbelievable but he tackles like a trojan every time.
Long is a rugby league legend- love him or hate him or sometimes both!! When he is great hes a saints legend but whenever he does something silly its because he's a Wiganer! Plus he has has the most hair styles in rugby - you never know how its going to be when he runs out. Favourite moment is the drop goal in grand final.
Will miss them both and hope everyone gives them a great send off (cant myself unfotunatley!) so add an extra round of applause from me!

| Agree 100% about Gilly. Unsung hero, mr reliable.
As for longy he has been simply superb for us over the year, but i think that the club have done the right thing in letting him go as his performances IMO, are slipping.
As for memories of longy the man of the match performance in the challenge cup final stands out. As does nicking st bernards head and running back to the recieve the kick off!

| Don't feed the troll people.
Two brilliant players, I still think it was the wrong decision to let Gilly go but he'll do an excellent job for Huddersfield I'm sure. As for Long, well what can you say, he has won more huge games for us than anyone. Easily the best British scrum half of the Super league era.
The signing of both of these players raised a few eyebrows, how they proved the doubters wrong.

After tonight he cemented his place in St Helens folklore, and that will do for me.
Thanks for the memories Sean.
