I was naively one of those that believed that. However, the picture has become clear. Phil was and still is in awe of Saints in the super league era. In the years Wigan were not a threat, it was easy for Clarke to appreciate our standard and support the rugby we played. That came across at the time that he was affectionate to us. However since the first signs of a Wigan revival, he wants us toppled, badly! He is desperate to see Wigan become the new Saints in effect. Play unbelivible rugby and become a dominant team. He has indeed donned his Wigan hat again, and it is highly visible.
