I think most knew he was never going to be next scully but I think most thought he'd be the ideal player to replace him.
Players like scully come around every 10 years or so.
Wilkin looked to have all the skills needed to soften the blow of when scully did leave or retire. Wilkin was mobile, great defence, good hands, good kicking game and looked to be a leader.
IMO he's still a ok players but is just a tackling machine these days.
