Turns out this is far deeper than just the original three involved, seems Gleeson was far from the only player to have been taking the supplements. Again it seems Sean Long/his dad, were heavily involved as well as the majority of the team.
Drugs in any sport is something that needs tackling, so surely the RFL should be punished in some way for their involvement? They received information that much of the Hull team may be taking them yet do nothing about it? Shocking.

| Another Player banned and then points the finger at others for his own feck up.
If the RFL are in any way to balme why no legal action taken by UKAD??
As for the rest of the alleged Hull players taking it i'm sure more than Gleeson has been tested so why no more positive results?
I think EVERY club should be tested on a more regular basis and then we'd soon see how "rife" any substance abuse is within RL.

He may play rugby union now, but he is still involved in rugby league as a coach of the Salford City Reds.

| If the article is true and the people at the RFL have any integrity whatsoever both Rimmer and Rosewarne will resign. The RFL knew there was the potential for a huge blight on the game but rather than doing the right thing and sending out the right message they covered it up!! This is not the behaviour you expect from a supposedly impartial governing body.
Terry Newton alluded to the use of drugs within the sport - we have seen at Leeds with Bailey and Senior examples of +ve tests - the sport needs cleaning up and soon. Otherwise it runs the risk of ending up like cycling or athletics where no one believes any of the results are a true reflection of the abilities of the participants involved.
With regards the stuff a Hull - this is pretty small fry. compared to the use of anabolic steroids, HGH or blood doping. Only the nieve can believe these more serious offences are not prevalent within the game both here and in the NRL.
RL is the greatest game played by the bravest warriors - all stakeholders need tangible evidence that its participants are running on their natural fuel not some additive enhanced petrol.

An independent review of drug abuse in this great game, needs to take place. This can not be allowed to carry on. If the powers that be at RFL new that it was more widespread than they should be sacked.
Also IMO any player who fails a drug test should be banned for life from the game, no soft second chances.

| Paul Cullen, Kevin Sinfield, Keith Senior and now Martin Gleeson have all indicated that there is wide spread substance abuse at the heart of Rugby League.
Maybe now is the time for a whole scale investigation by the UKAD to put paid to the saga.

| And when did Senior say that? Why must posters make things up? It's not hard to find what Senior really thinks, despite how some posters have mis-represented him on here. Just read his book FFS.
Here's what he says "hand on heart I can say that I am not aware of anybody, team mate or opponent who is or has been using performance enhancing drugs. I have heard, through the grapevine of people taking recreational drugs, though I've never actually seen it. There are also rumours about players who suddenly seem to get bigger or stronger over an off season but I've got no evidence to say that is down to anything other than hard work. Maybe I am being naive again but I've no reason to believe it's rife in the game as some people claim. Clearly it does happen but as far as I'm aware those are isolated cases, very much the exception rather than the rule"
Lets not over react to the comments of Gleeson. It's someone else's fault he took the drugs, it's someone else's fault he lied - yadda yadda yadda. The guy is a and has been a blight on Rugby League for too long. The UKADA investigated and saw no need to bring charges against the RFL. I'll trust the UKADAs judgment over Gleesons or some journalists.

| There's also a big difference between players taking something which they wrongly assume to be OK (which seems to be the case here), and knowingly taking a banned substance. I find it hard to believe some would want players banend for life for the former. Even if they are idiots.
It also shows that clubs need to make sure players understand who to ask for advice on medication, and make damned sure those people know what they're doing.

| If ever I am feeling under the weather the first person I think of asking for help is Sean Long.

If any governing body is serious about eradicating the taking of banned substances within it's sport, ignorance cannot be justified as a defence. Any individual testing positive for a banned substance should take personal responsibility for what they have taken and face the consequences of their illicit actions. Of course, they should retain the right to finger anyone else within that sport who may have been complicit in an advisory, cover-up or dispensary capacity, provided they can produce relevant evidence of such misdeeds.

For once, what he said.
Please be careful what you allege.

So, Keith Swiftcorn is actually Jon Hopoate. That's a little mystery solved.
