"Leeds is the greatest club in Rugby League"
Alex Murphy 2011: |
|
| He was a bit before my time, but thought I'd get the book as an alternative to reading about modern day players just to get a different perspective on the game and its players. I ordered it from Amazon yesterday and only paid £4.50 including postage for the book which was £14.99 when it came out. There's a couple left at that price if anyone's interested.

| Saw him play when he was in his prime, also was at the match when he was
Injured,salford at headingley.
A fantastic player,I got to know him really well after his retirement,
He was a nice man, it was a tragedy he died so young.
As was the case with the great John Holmes.

Strange, given that there are so few tragedies in our game that two happened at Salford, and both involving half-backs.
I was there when Chris Sanderson collapsed on field.
I've never before or since known so many people fall so silent.
Shoey was one of my first childhood heroes. He was an explosive player who punched way above his weight and could play in many positions.
That the late great John Holmes described him as 'the best player I've ever seen' is fitting testament to his brilliance.

At Salford?
One of those incidents took place at the Willows but the other was at Headingley (North-West corner in the act of scoring) as the poster correctly recalled.

| Thanks !!!!! I did not know this book exsisted. Just bought a copy and free delivery too. One of my all time favorites shoey ! I remember the cowardly act by Dixon of Salford. Kicked shoey in the head late after scoring in corner of west and north stand. Shoey spent a long time in wheel chair and was paraylised.

| A tragic accident on the rugby field, IMO. Two players giving 100%, one trying to score, the other attempting to prevent the touchdown.
As far as I recall Mick said pretty much the same.

| Mick is one of my all time favourites, gave everything in a game would be hard to call as the best between lewis Jones and also John Holmes but hey they were all greats in my eyes.
I was there when the accident happened we all thought it was deliberate till later but was as stated 2 guys giving 100% to score or deny the score, great tradegy.

| Managed to acquire "No Pain, No Gain", Kevin Ward's biography and started reading it last night. I've made a resolution to read more books this year so i'll look out for that one.

I was in the southstand that day when the tragedy happened,so I didn't get a close up view ,but I admit I was caught up in all the hype against the lat Colin Dixon, and I regretted it later.I once met Colin Dixon in the bar at Headingley and found him a gentleman,a decent bloke
