not been for a couple of years, but it was pretty good when i last went, iirc it's free to get in, but the car park is a bit cheekily priced.

| What's in it?
I found the royal armouries really dull. Some of the Asian clothes and armour were novel but mostly it was just glass cabinets with uniforms, guns and swords - not very interactive and not much to interest people beyond war nerds.

| The special exhibits they have there are sometimes worth a look (the sport and war one for example was brilliant) however the main museum is pretty sp, it's like the main IMWM doesn't trust the mancs with their stuff so has given them the bear minimum.
The highlight is the tank, a T34 if memory serves me correct, the finest tank there has ever been according to my lecturer. There is also a really rubbish Soviet car.
If you need to kill an hour or two, it is alright but don't expect it to take any more time up than that.

| If this sort of thing floats your boat and you're ever down on the M11 pop into RAF Duxford.
I used to have to drive past there regularly with work and someone told me it was free. Unfortunately it was £16 but....there was loads of stuff.....virtually any warplane you could think of plus a big yankee air museum and big museum of ground warfare stuff (WW1 to present day - lots of tanks, artillery pieces, reconstructions). Its not really my thing (though it was when I was a kid) but it would be easy to spend a day there.

I think the Armouries are amazing, but then I am a total war nerd!!
Been to Duxford about 15 years ago and thought that was good too. Strangely enough I've never been to either IWM but I'd love to go, but the main one for me would be the Bovington Tank museum. I get a slight "nudger" thinking about that. If only it wasn't so far away!!

| IF you want to see static displays the IWMN isnt the place to go.
What it does is educate you, via interactive exhibits, video and audio recordings.
The things that are there are basically props in a theatre play.

Thanks to something you started on here a few months ago I have become a war nerd. Just ploughing through the World at War box set I ended up buying.
I went to the IWM in London when I were a nipper and really enjoyed that. I might check out the one in Manchester.
THE best museum I've ever been to was the Smithsonian Air snd Space museum in Washington DC. Unbeleivably free entrance and one could spend a week in there. Long way togo though.Slightly less impressive was the International Spy museum opposite the FBI building, though it was still pretty decent. In fact, if Museums and monuments float your boat you can't go wrong with DC.

I think Dan Brown would agree with you after reading his latest book, sounds brilliant for museums and historical architecture.

Offered to take the lad for a Thursday to Monday visiting taking in an NFL game this winter but he said he doesn't want to miss time out of 6th form. Either that or he doe't want dragging round museums and memorials by me.
Now looking for a 25 year old blonde girlfreind to take away for the weekend instead. (Female before Pauig puts himself forward - and he's never passing for 25 or blonde).
