| hmprh Adamson it seems to be. Can't say I'm excited with that one, it's a bit of a nothing appointment. More negative press than positive press I think.
Would much rather have a good young British Coach taking the kids, and also taking advantage of the new "link" we have with Canterbury to expand his knowledge...

| Not sure about Jimmy Lowes appointment or that of McDermott to be honest.
On the plus side we have two British guys on board. Both served under Tony Smith and both allegedly with potential.
On the minus side neither have achieved a thing with London or Salford.
Personally I would have preferred an up and coming assistant coach from Australia to bring a bit of flair to the side.
Can`t see either of our two providing that to be honest.
But like others have said time will tell and they will have my support at least for the new season.

Well neither side no matter who was in charge would have done much, and to bring Jimmys time at Salford as an example is a bit unfair. It's not as if he was the main man or even there long enough to make a constructive opinion on his skill.
He was however pap at the Wire, not afraid to blood the youngsters though.

| True Yed what you are saying.
I guess I am a little under whelmed by the appointment and felt we could do better.
I always felt McDermott would make a good coach and touted for him when Tony Smith left.
I am happy to support them as mentioned previously.
No doubt time will tell.
I actually think we are going through a bit of a transition at Leeds this season so it could be misleading anyway around their competencies.

| In an area where there is no quota and no salary cap in play, where a (wealthy) team are permitted to assemble a backroom staff without compromise, where the best of their kind can achieve results that appear way beyond the apparent capabilities of the squad at their disposal...... am I wrong to feel underwhelmed with the coaching team currently being assembled at Headingley?

Perhaps the two-and-a-half brain-celled triumvirate of McDermott, Lowes and Adamson may turn out to be greater than the sum of their collective parts?

I think you're over estimating Adamson's intellect.

| What is going on at Headingley?
It makes no sense that Lowes and possibly Adamson are first choice replacements. I can only assume that the clear-out of coaching staff was in response to some kind of disciplinary incident, because replacing a successful line-up of McClennan, Cummins and Poching with McDermott, Lowes and Adamson is one hell of a risky way to manage a transition.
I'm not sure how any of the new individuals will be able to bring new tactics and coaching to improve our squad from last year. We didn't have to go for someone with NRL experience but the results at Wigan and Huddersfield suggest that that is the best way to do things. Maybe GH is trying to challenge this argument.
I'm prepared to wait and see and hope I'm wrong about this, but all in all the changes to the squad and coaching staff are a backward step IMO. In a more positive light this could be like the Daryl Powell appointment, which saw the nucleus of our current side slowly introduced in the 2002 and 2003 seasons. We've seen youth development slide and maybe a British set-up is needed to bring this back: but at what cost to the fortunes of the first team (see Bradford as a recent example).

McDermott, and who knows maybe Adamson, were replacing Cummins and Poching anyway. Take the Lowes issue out of the equation.
McDermott would have certainly been an improvement on Cummins, who had been lucky to be part of a the era that was happening at the club with or without him. And even my old nan would have been an improvement on Poching, who took that under 20's so far backwards it was frightening.
The fact that McClennan then threw a spanner in the works is what then changed everything. Is McDermott up to the top job? then he needed an assistant to replace his role.
Personally I think McDermott will do a far better job than he is getting credit for so far. I am dissapointed on his choice of assistant, who I think is a turd, but will hope to be proven wrong on that.

| brian mac was very heavily involved under tony smith in 2004 and was greatly respected by the players. as to wether he is good enough for the top job at a big club is up form debate but imo he deserves a chance.
lowes i am unsure about. he seems to be a good assistant but not cut out for head coach. i would much rather have had franny there but we have a lot of senior experienced players who will also offer help to BM( if he asks for it).
adamson offers nothing whatsoever to me. a joke decision if true and someone wants there backside kicking. stuart wilkinson should have got the u20's job, any fool could see that.
in fact anyone but adamson

| I don't mean this to sound like i'm gloating or even trying to be controversial for the sake of it to get a rise out of people, but, is this similar to the end of the whole Bullsmania period?
Bulls did well, then petered out a little than just fell into mid table mediocrity.
I hope not (im being genuine) a hard fast competitive SL is a dream i hope is fulfilled but i am a little worried in the direction you seem to be heading.

Newsflash, people do lose jobs because they are not good enough.
Poching most definately fell into that category.
Even when it became clear we were now looking for an assistant the club still never even considered offering Poching the role. There was a reason for that yes, but not the one you are looking for.

| Quote ="Andy Gilder"Big name appointments don't always bring success.'"
The same can be said of 'top quality' coaches regardless of perceived (big name) reputations but they are still more likely than average coaches. If the coaching team of McDermott, Lowes and Adamson (when confirmed) can bring the quality then their prior reputations won't matter. I'm not holding my breath on finding the answer to that one though.
Wigan prior to the start of last season replaced one of Britain's reputed finest with a relatively unknown (in these parts) assistant from the NRL and struck gold, with basically the same squad on paper + Deacon. Wayne Bennett took a squad/club of recent massive underachievement to the NRL title.
On the footballing side of the organisation (in the salary-capped era) the head-coaching position is probably the most crucial appointment in the club. During the SL Era Leeds have made some good appointments (Murray and Smith), an OK appointment (McClennan) and some questionable ones (Bell, Lance and Powell.) Only time will tell which category McDermott will end up occupying.
