With the benefit of hindsight lack of recruitment for last year has played a major part in how bad we've been this year. The club bought into the excuse-athon for 2016, and last year we won a very weak SL which hid how poor we'd become. Part of the problem (and this is common when 'great' teams fall apart) is overrating the ability and roles of bit part players. Ablett, JJB, Delaney etc were never world beaters, and we've just kept them around too long.

The decline in quality is really stark if you watch the 2012, 2015 and 2017 GFs back to back (or just 2015 and 2017).

Longer than that. It’s not hindsight. Look at the comments now about difficult to change too many at once. Hence why it should have been done over a longer period, and whilst we were in a position of strength.

I've been saying for a long time that 2017 recruitment was a huge contributor to where we are now. We had an awful 2016 and yet didn't add anyone except Ormondroyd to the squad. Had we brought in two new forwards then and started to move some of the older guys on, we'd be two players closer to being decent again. 2017 was great to win but again it set us back because it hid how ordinary most of our squad are/were becoming.

I'd quite happily settle for Leeds being competitive and enjoyable to watch for a couple of years without winning things necessarily until the junior production line cranks up.
