You're right Damo, Wigans support is well overated. Couldn't fill a 13,000 stadium down the road for a challenge cup semi, couldn't fill a 25,000 capacity home stadium for the World club challenge (leeds highest 38,000, Leeds lowest 27,000, for the same game) and can't even fill the piedome for "the biggest derby in rugby league" versus saints. There was more at the wigan athletic v Q.P.R game on wembley saturday than at most wigan RL games. It's a football town.

The empty seats at the semi were in the saints ends.

The world club challenge tickets left over were being sold by the RFL, not wigan. The prices were also stupid.

We DID sell-out the piedome for our derby game. Did Leeds sell-out for theirs?

7,000 free tickets were given away for that QPR game.

well calling Wigan a football town on the basis of attendances alone, then we also cant deny that Leeds is a football city and has been since the mid 60s ..It doesnt mean because we have lower attendances than the local soccer clubs that Wigan and Leeds are not rugby towns.We are on the fact that we both have more history and tradition.I was once at Headingley in 1961 1st round of the cc versus Wigan score 5-5 attendance 38000 ,Leeds utd were at home same day attendance 8000.Wigan athletic werent even a league club ,and I am a Leds utd fan ,but I think you could find better ways of critising Wigan than by saying its a soccer town,by doing that you are not doing our game any good

Wigan is, was and hopefully always will be a rugby league town irrespective of the efforts of sundry football teams - Wigan County, Wigan United, Wigan Town, Wigan Borough and now Wigan Athletic.
