Personally really don't agree with this. There's a salary cap in this sport for a reason yet the RFL, Wigan and Sky have found a way to boost his salary far beyond what Wigan can afford to pay him. All because he was tempted by some more money in union so we had to give in to his greed and find a way to keep him. Don't get me wrong he's a great player at club and international level and it would have been sad so lose him from the game but
a) its a massive bending of the rules to boost his salary,
b) if all he's interested in is more cash in his pocket then so be it let him go to union rather than still get paid a hell of a lot and play the game he loves.
I'd have the same opinion whatever club and whatever player was in this situation.

Don't think anyone would have had a issue with Sam getting some media work. The problem arrises when it is confirmed it is as part of a package to keep him at Wigan. Will it be a package offered to all clubs who might be in danger of losing a player to union, and some may argue its unfair on other teams for example Leeds have appeared to sign up some of our young stars on long term contracts without the help of sky and raising the cap, at the expense of maybe further signings?
Not got a issue with him getting a media job, but just a few concerns it raises

Can't see a problem with a player earning a bit on the side as pundit. Players have appeared as pundits before and I'm sure they won't have done it for free. Barrie Mcdermott and Kevin Sinfield have appeared as pundits.
The only problem I have is yet more Wigan bias on Sky Sports. Of the current Sky personnel who have played pro rugby league only Stevo, Cullen and Wells have not at sometime in their career played for the Pie eaters.

Agree re no problems with him working for sky. It's just when it's stated he has the job as part of a package to keep him at Wigan and league. Seems like a circumnavigation of the cap. |

The RFL also gave £££££ to keep Andy Farrell and Cunningham in RL in the past but then the £££££ wasn't available to anyone else.
I'm more in favour more of his deal been "cap exempt" and the Pies paying him rather than other organisations picking up the tab.

Where does it say he is getting paid by anyone other than Wigan?

Your right it doesn't say it. But would be rather bizarre Wigan paying him to work for someone else. He might be doing it for free for the experience, however being a sceptical chap not so sure! |
