| My good lady and I were talking about Thrum Hall and she asked me why the Scratching Shed end was called the Scratching Shed. I wasn't able to give her an answer as I don't know. Can anyone enlighten us both please.

| Well if it fits in with how every other thread on here ends up it will have do with unpaid rent.
To "Scratch" as if to try and "Scrape" together funds.
To "Scratch" as if to try and remove an annoying itch, like an unpaid bill.
Or to go back to "Scratch" and start again with a clean sheet when nothing is owing.
"Shed" as owing a "Shed Load" of something, such as money.
Or "To Shed" as if to remove something like an unpaid bill.
Hope that clears it up.

| Might stem from when it used to be ashes , and you had to scratch a flat spot to stand comfortably?

| A Scratching (or Scrattin) Shed was a common name for covered terracing at sports grounds at the time ours was created (just after the First World War). So it was nothing unique to Halifax or Thrum Hall.

| I may be wrong here but I understand it stems from northern pit workers who wore wooly flat caps and regularly adjusted the headgear to scratch their hot heads. Historically the big sheds were where the working classes gathered together and a number of clubs used the same name just like many adopted the Spion Kop name after the hill taken by the British in the Zulu war in Africa.... Hence many sheds were called Kops and still are.... Sheff Weds, Liverpool etc
Scratching Shed was also adopted by many northern clubs and I believe Leeds Utd also had a Scratching Shed.....
This is what my grandad told me the name came from years ago but it could be total rubbish or a myth but it does sound a reasonable reason....??
