Quote: lmw "from above

im no business man but that involves spending to gain on merchandise ect and future youth but again you cant gain from spending on that unless someone is there to buy it and by given the chance of promotion and gaining fans on the way then they can become the custom to what u intend to grow'"

Working on your own you will never make significant income from merchandice

Explain future youth?

Quote: lmw "you say promotion, relegation doesnt work as does that moron stevo but im sure over the last 100 years many clubs have gone up and down and gone on to win trophys and making money along the way. was it spent right by the majority? probably not but i feel clubs in our position have learnt and should be given a go and would do a better job that the salfords.

goodnight starbug'"

For the vast majority of its life RL had 1 division and clubs reied on local players and the winning of trophys has nothing to do with running sports businesses

I'd suggest the vast majority of clubs that won trophys lost money

What have clubs in our position learned? , Leigh certainly havent learned anything and wouldnt do a better job than Salford, and lets face it is that the sum of your ambition? Getting hammered 3 weeks out of 4

Nighty nite

Licensing is a great idea. If it has a clear objective and the governing body has the balls to both give chances to clubs that match clearly defined criteria and punish the clubs that don't. If the governing body are to be seen to take their own system seriously it needs to be continuously monitored so those people committing misdemeanours are the ones punished, not the people left to clear up the mess.

We have been sold the need for licensing on a number if issues - stadia - joke, financial security - Bradford, crusaders and now Salford. Geographic location - you can still throw a duvet over 99% of SL clubs and crusaders are gone. Youth development - now it seems that has all been given to championship clubs.

Fans of the sport at all levels are seeing the truth now. Licencing a great idea shockingly implemented leaving Super League looking like it started out life as a list of clubs jotted down on the back of a fag packet one boozy night and is not to be strayed from one bit.

Hardly a surprise people are switching off.

As an aside, the RFU are selling naming rights to twickers and investing the money in lower league clubs to keep P&R sustainable. Seems they copied many things from RL but steer clear of licensing!

Having others agree with failed ideas isnt neccessarrily a good thing, it explains why clubs like yours and ' mine ' are still in the Championship playing in front of less than a couple of thousand fans

I dont have grievances, I am dissapointed when I see supposedly clever people making the same mistakes that have been made over and over again, eventually even a Chimpanzee realises it cant pull a banana out of a hole sideways

Quite right freddie, the easiest way to make licencing a success is to build a strong second tier , that puts pressure on the licencees to up their game

Unfortunatly the RFL either dont want that, or dont understand that

And what will happen to Salford?

Lease on "iconic" ground bought by RFL
Players wages paid during period of administration
Provisional year licence awarded
Period of silence in hope no one trips over crap swept under carpet

Move along, there's nowt to see here

What a great thread to wake up to on a rugby-free monday morning. 5 pages in before I catch sight of a 3-way conversation. I have nothing to offer really other than Salford have never done me any harm, I don't care for them or dislike them in equal measures but unfortunately for them I expect they won't be afforded the same luxurious treatments of higher profile or development area clubs by our governing body. Salford will be given the boot & a reduced number of SL clubs ensues.
I might go back to the original post & read the link but I sort of know what to expect, I don't think this will end "and they all lived happily ever after"..........

Perhaps Manchester City could help, after all they throw £millions away on Balotelli and Nasri.

Seriously, tho' I'm no accountant, but, Salford have debts of £1.5 million, the council and Peel holdings were going to pay them off.
Right if they did, what then? Income v expenditure is still as it was. Not enough coming in v too much going out, so how long could they exist?
How long before another bail out?

Did anyone hear Tony Rae's radio interview recently? Basically saying London Broncos will end up being the biggest SL club. This is why the game falters. No grip on reality whatsoever. The only message that comes out of the RFL is "aren't we doing great"?

I want to know who at KPMG gave their "considered" opinion on the clubs that were awarded a license. Two of them have effectively gone bust.
