We called at Cockermouth the other year, there are a few decent pubs there but that was before the floods!
I presume they are back to normal, there was one just before the town centre on the left can't remember its name that had a nice beer garden down to the river.
There are some pubs along the main road, Keswick is a nice place too.
Basically the nearer to Whitehaven you get the less pubs there are from our experience.
There's a few pubs in Whitehaven town centre, but very few of them do food, There's a Wetherspoons and a few years back we ate at a place called The Whittington Cat which was fairly decent pub grub, though may be tempted to stop a bit before Whitehaven myself this year somewhere like Cockermouth
