On my regular trips up to Barrow (and Walney Island) I use between £18 and £21 worth of petrol (depending on traffic conditions) in a car with a 1.6 litre engine. This journey, however, starts and finishes in Rossendale (say 25 miles each way less than Halifax). So, say, around £25 for a petrol engined vehicle of similar capacity should be about right.
I would reckon on a fair donation being around £15 to £20 (there's more to running a car than just putting in petrol). I have a Fiat Stilo 2.4 and I'm hoping £40 in fuel will get me there and back.
