Giants 36 – 34 Kent Ravens
Guildford Giants sealed a very tight win in the first game of their London and South Conference league. Brian Stokes, Karl Grigor and Adam Cox were on the score sheet again along with Charlie Maguire and debutant Cassian Law scored twice and kicked five goals.
It had been a slow start for the Giants with Kent scoring almost immediately from the whistle. Before they knew it Giants were 10 points to nil down and it looked like it was going to be a long day for the team in blue.
However Giants came back with some terrific attacking play and the game was a very hard fought contest. There was a large flashpoint in the match when Charlie Maguire was sent off along with a Kent player for violent conduct. The two were called over by the ref and when Maguire offered his hand in peace the Kent player appeared to try and head butt him. Maguire reacted and both were sent for an early bath.
The loss of a player each opened up play which made for a high scoring contest. The Giants took a two point lead towards the end of the match which they had to defend hard until the final whistle.
Head coach Nico was pleased with his teams efforts after the match “I’ve been saying every week but the effort and determination of the side once again was awesome” Captain Brian Stokes added “Head coach of Super League outfit Quins RL Brian Mcdermott took our training session on Monday. Everything he showed us was put into practice today and it worked really well”
The man of the match award went to Karl Grigor for his relentless tackling and hit-ups.
