Does it still add up to 39 hours ?
Congratulations on getting the new job and for finding one that gives you 39 guaranteed hours - there is no requirement to pay you any extra time for the hours in excess of 39, it would be nice to get paid for them but there is no law that says it has to be at a premium rate, or that weekend working should be at a premium either.

| Presumably they opted you out of the Working Time Directive too by getting you to sign a document stating that you didn't want to be considered in its calculations ?
You're certainly not exceeding the 1 rest day in 14 but you may end up exceeding 48 hours over 17 weeks.
On the other hand, you're getting paid for it, which is always nice.

| I would imagine it is wording along the lines of hours required to complete the work and a degree of flexibility is expected given the variability of demand?

Check it and see if it includes any mention of something like 'plus any reasonable overtime deemed necessary by the company.............'
My contracted hours are 40 hrs Monday to Friday, plus this type of clause. Our staff association are taking legal advice as to the definition of reasonable as since we have had several redundancies in certain positions, there has been regular occurrences of 50+ hours being logged.

| Just because there is high levels of unemployment should not mean people should take being crapped on as a sign of gratitude for being in work
