| Quote: the cal train "hull.tab.co.uk/2013/11/19/huu-bans-the-sun/
My university union has decided, through a vote, to ban the Sun from being sold on campus. I didn't know about it until a facebook page (a comical page run by a Hull student, nothing to do with anything official) posted it earlier today, probably because as a first year I don't mix with any of the union lot and they don't seem to care about announcing anything past their inner circles and just wait for it to filter out by word of mouth.
Personally, I wouldn't wipe my booty with the sun, but I do not see any reason to ban it, especially given that the union shop sells every major rag and all the glossy gossip mags which are full of just as much derogatory vitriol (you'll see in the link above a big deal has been made about the page 3 girls and how it's demeaning to women, which I agree with to an extent but like I said, don't ban it).
The point I'm trying to make is that the university is a place full of adults (in a legal sense) who can make up their own minds about what they want to read, or not read. And no one should have the power to tell them they can't read a certain paper over another.
Any thoughts?'"
Bit emotive to use "censorship" and "ban" and who is actually telling students what they can and can't read?
Not to include a certain newspaper in their offering is surely up to them, isn't it??

I agree I don't see what has actually been censored here.
The university union shops are owned by the university union, and it seems they have had a vote and decided they won't stock the Sun. Private businesses should always be free to decide what they do and don't sell.
Other shops will make the decision to sell the Sun and I am sure any Hull students that want to read the Sun can easily find an alternative place to buy it.
Censorship would be Hull university saying you are not allowed to read the Sun on campus and we will take disciplinary measures against you if you are found with it.

I rather like the French system where, if a business chooses to sell one daily newspaper, it has to sell the rest too. Rather good from a democratic point of view.

| Have they nothing better to do than that ? If they don't like what is in The Sun then don't buy it - or is that too easy ?

A salutory lesson to the OPer and all (including Russell Brand) on the importance of voting. If you don't vote against a daft motion then you only have yourself to blame. It's a form of self-censorship in this case! (Is that the same as idicocy?).

It's not practical for students to attend every meeting and vote on every issue. Student's unions from a political point of view are often run by people who are into politics for its own sake. This was certainly a big turn-off politically for me when I was at Uni as it was the first time I came across politics for the sake of it rather than politics with a specific set of aims. I am not saying they are all like that but there is certainly a fair amount of this that goes on in my opinion.
When I was at Aberystwyth the Welsh Nationalists were active and once vote in support of the IRA (This Union supports.... kind of motion). They often hijacked meetings to pull stunts like this including less serious ideas stating all bands who came to play at the Union 25% of them had to be Welsh speaking (despite far fewer than that % of Welsh speakers at the Uni). I didn't "self-censor" myself on either vote. I didn't know either was happening and don't feel its a students duty to monitor the goings on of the Union so they can troop along to meetings to vote the latest idiotic motion down.
In that particular case with the IRA it made the front page of the Western Mail (Wales very own and widely read back then newspaper).
Once we found out about it virtually the rest of the entire Uni student population trooped up the hill to rescind the motion. That got a column inch on about page six of the Western Mail.

Back in the day, I used to have a permanent order for (ahem) [iAquarist and Pondkeeper [/i at a WH Smith shop in Huddersfield.
Then WHS banned Private Eye (anyone round here old enough to remember that event?).
So I cancelled my order for A & PK and told WHS why I'd done it.
