It depends how much you spend a month. If you are on a cheap tariff and keep to your limits, your worth to them is massively reduced. If you are on a £50 tariff or overspent on your current tariff for example you will have been more profitable. Also depends on how they are doing, if they're hitting targets they won't throw money out of the door to keep customers that aren't very profitable.

Yeah you're right. Was on a £30 a month contract and never went above. Just found it strange that Phones4U could get me an upgrade with a massive saving and Orange wouldn't budge when I spoke to them.

| My new tariff starts on Friday so currently on the 15.50 deal, think I get 100 mins, ultd texts but no data so I end up going slightly over my contract now and again, with the most being about a tenner over, usually only a couple of pound. Depends if I have a busy month needing to be ringing people, or away from my laptop and needing internet access.
Probably why they want to keep hold of me, then
Can't see any way I can go over what they've gave me now, won't use anywhere near that much data as I don't really need my phone at work, in fact will probably just take my current handset with me so that there is no chance my new one can get dusty or damaged. We have internet access at home, and when I go back to uni in September I am online more than I am at the moment.
Suppose only if I need to ring any 08 numbers, that'll probably be the only thing I can be charged for.

Your supplier has to request your phone be unlocked by Apple, should cost £15, this is the charge Apple pass on to the telcos. Any other method will be temporary and will be undone at the next iOS upgrade.
O2 can not refuse to unlock a phone as long as you are close to the end of your contract.

My mum paid the 15 quid and sent it over to me in oz, when it arrived i reset it and it was locked.
We've both rang O2 on numerous occasions and they say they cant do anything without the number off the sim card (we've lost it).
Is this right?

No, firstly if it is unlocked it will never lock again, secondly it is done by IMEI number not phone number, service.o2.co.uk/IQ/SRVS/CGI-BIN ... CASE=17424

| I keep seeing vague things about rooting android phones. I have a HTC sensation and wondered what the benefits/disadvantages of rooting were, and how hard it is. Basically if its worthwhile, as I know almost nothing about it.

| Anyone recommend an alternative to my HTC Wildfire? Contract is up but I am not into paying £25-£30 a month for a phone.
The HTC has been fine but has one major drawback - the Bluetooth stopped working with the car bluetooth when it got upgraded from Android 2.2 to 2.3. It seems the phone forgets the pairing as soon as bluetooth is turned off.
Anyone know if that is a 2.3 bug or just my phone? Lots of the cheaper phones similar to the HTC Wildfire seem to still run Antrpod 2.3 and it would be very frustrating to get a new phone with the same problem. I could just stick with the one I have and save some money on the contract.
Samsung Galaxy Ace has been mentioned on another but I think I prefer my Wildfire to be honest.

| Persistant problem with the HTC Sensation. Me and the Mrs both have one, both of which switch off several times daily. The battery levels fluctuate (fully charge, no charge, half charge) with each turn on and off.
I've just reformatted mine, and its still doing it. I reckon its something to do with the internet but theres that many subjects on it online I don't know which ones right.
Going to send it off if I can't find a solution but I'd rather not be phoneless for a few days.

I think with Blackberry you have to pay them direct a few quid a month for Internet access. Even when you get a contract with a Blackberry I think part of the money you pay goes to Blackberry for their data. So you may need to call them up to set up a data account or something. I've never owned a blackberry but I'm sure I've read that before

I've never come across that. In terms of data, it would go through the network's data network. The only involvement with Blackberry themselves is if you set up an email address, as it has to go through a Blackberry server I believe?

| The new Nokia Lumia windows 8 phones look mightily impressive. Could also see the start of an Apple-Samsung tit for tat series of court cases between Nokia/MS and Google as they've stolen (And barely changed) a few of Google's headline new features, such as Google Now.

If you reported the first phone as stolen/lost, it will no longer work as they will bar the IMEI?

| What are everyone's thoughts on the 4g scandal?
Basically 4g is being introduced to the UK, bringing download speeds way ahead of most home broadband connections to mobile users. Everything Everywhere (A joint venture between the owners of T-Mobile and Orange) have been allowed by OFCOM to launch 4g first, ahead of the other major networks. They have now launched a new brand, EE, which will be the only 4g network in the country initially. They were allowed to do this as they had unused capacity on their current radio spectrum and the other networks now have to wait until some time in 2013 when OFCOM hold an auction for new radio frequencies reserved for 4g.
Surely a regulatory body like OFCOM is there to ensure monopolies and unfair competition are not possible? Yet they are deliberately giving one network, at least a 6 month head start and a massive competitive advantage.
With the new rumoured to be 4g compatible iphone 5 launching tomorrow, it will be mighty interesting to see if you will be able to get one on an EE contract. If you can, EE will have a truly gigantic advantage.

I fail to see the scandal, EE have unused bandwidth so are using it for 4g, not their fault others have used up their space.

EE's spare bandwidth came about because they merged two big networks to create the biggest mobile network in this country. OFCOM are then allowing the biggest network to launch 4g with the iPhone 5, Galaxy S3 and Nokia Lumia 920 months ahead of the bandwidth auction that will allow the other networks into the market.
It's anti competitive as they've just handed EE, already the biggest network, an enormous leg up on the other networks.
Would delaying EE's launch until 2013 not have been fairer?
OFCOM are there to prevent such things surely?
Quote ="Vodafone"We are frankly shocked that Ofcom has reached this decision, the regulator has shown a careless disregard for the best interests of consumers, business and the wider economy through its refusal to properly regard the competitive distortion created by allowing one operator to run services before the ground has been laid for a fully competitive market.'"
I agree with the other networks. They didn't create the spare capacity through investment, they did it through being the biggest. They are now going to go from the biggest network to being the dominant network. I think it's clearly harmful for competition in the market, as they could easily charge £60 per month and people would still flock to it as it's the only network with 4g.
