| Burnley & Pendle RL 26-28 Ashton Bears B.
A close game that was decided by the last kick of the match with Ashton B coming back from 26-18 down with 4 minutes left on the clock. B&P are mainly an RU side coached by ex-Wigan youth coach Brian Foley and showed some promising signs against an Ashton B side containing six 16 year olds making their debut at open age level alongside 3 players playing their 1st ever game of rugby of either code. As a model for getting new sides established and bringing in a good social aspect to RL the summer merit league system is great.

Yes they did, in fact B&P had the full 20. With it being early season we played the game over four 20 mniute quarters which works well.

| Wigan Riversiders Eels 40 - 18 Bury Broncos (roughly)
Despite the loss, fairly pleased with the performance. Think it was 10-10 at half time and that was a fair reflection at that point. With 5 young new lads playing their first ever games of Rugby League, and 5 of our first-teamers (mostly our pack!) missing, we didn't do too badly. Wigan had about 15 subs and kept rolling them on and off (actually, someone told me they had 30 players!), and their experience told in the end - simply far more experienced man-for-man. Our defence was ineffective and fragmented for a period in the 2nd half and allowed Wigan some easy open-field running, and we let in 2-3 very soft tries that flattered the scoreline.
But happy with how the new lads did and very optimistic.

| Chester Gladiators 36-38 Bamber Bridge
Chester Gladiators 24-30 Salford Central
Both Merit League games, pleased to get 35 lads out on the field. Lots of new faces and both sides had a mix of some experienced lads and newcomers.
Felt with a bit more composure and nous we could have won both games (and a goalkicker!( but credit to Bamber and Salford. Two tough games played in the right way - not sure ref in first game would agree (7 sinbins and a red card!)

15 subs? We picked a straight twenty and lost 2 players for the the full game in the first 20, one of whom is having an operation on a badly injured wrist today. I saw enough from Bury to show they'll improve as the season progresses, second try was a peach. We look forward to coming to Bury later in the year.
