| Quote: Mr. Zucchini Head "Seems like a similar sort of game to week 1 last season when we played Leeds. I wouldn't worry too much, we had a decent season in the end and there's no reason you can't have one.
When you played us a few weeks ago two things struck me about your team. 1; the forwards looked unfit, and 2; there is no real pace in the team.
The first of those I put down to it being the first hit out and assumed they would improve. They still will improve but it would appear that was also a factor today and maybe you would have benefited from one more friendly. You don't ship 6 second half tries just because Whelam has jumped out of the line, the forwards must be struggling for a team to run away like that.
The second one I think will ultimately stop you from making the jump from 8th to the top 6. There is no substitute for pace. Today for example the Leeds players were quicker than their opposite number from 1 to 7. You can get by without having speed if you are well drilled, but it's that half yard of pace that turns a half chance into a try. Eden aside I don't see anyone who can show a clean pair of heels when they get put in space.'"
Not seen the game yet, but that is my general feeling too. Leeds have more pace than most, and others likely won't expose us quite so badly. Tbh, I was hoping a heavy patch might nullify their threat - I suppose the worry is that actually it did!
It'll take a while for things to gel. Hopefully not too long, as we've got some more tough games coming up. Perhaps we're as well getting them out the way early on, especially if we can get a couple of results, but if we don't then you worry a bit about confidence. Bit of a reality check, but I'll reserve judgement till we've played a few and I've watched even one.

| Most people knew that we lack pace in the backs, but yet we never (Cockayne apart) bothered strengthening in the backs. The pack will come good, there are too many quality played not to but I really worry about the backs. I though Eden was ok, apart from his customary couple of errors, Keating was looking to set stuff up but no-one seemed to be following him up, Burns needs to step up to the plate and was anonymous.
We didn't kick smart, we let them have too much easy possession and once they got a bit of steam up on the flanks, mainly Cockayne's side we didn't have an answer to them, this is disappointing as we did the double over them last season and apart from a couple of players, they are the same side.
I think the pack will be here for a few seasons without too much change, so the next recruiting MUST be in the backs, it's time up for Welham and hall is not the answer to any of the positions. I hope we can bring in a quality centre and winger for 2015 as I think that none of what we have will cut it THIS season, never mind next.

Correct. He was not even watching the game. Reminded me of football fans who frequent the north east corner of the kc.

Leeds stuffed us at home last year, too - 10-44. The only team we did a double over was Saints. We did beat everybody except Wigan, though.

| Wel I've just got in. And I must say after the first half, I was more than disappointed with that second half.
Wayman, Poore and Costigan are well off the pace, Langley and Larroyer were 'ok' but did longer spells.
Burns was for me lost out there, and understandably well off the pace. Keating was steady in the first, but didn't involve himself in the match in the second half, as a vocal good scrum half should, and that's a big worry to me! Welham needs a boot up his booty after that performance, that's the worst I've seen him play. Crap defence from Hall too. Lastly, but not least, I thought Sandercock was well and truly out-coached today.
Bearing in mind I have to not over-react with it being our first game of the season, tho after that performance, I can't not say I'm slightly concerned!

| I would pretty much agree with CS, the game was lost in the backs. Welham is like a revolving door, leaving Charlie exposed, Hodgson has no bottle and Hall is a winger only and all lack real pace. The pack more than matched leeds and showed a lot more agression than previous seasons so the middle of the park looks in good shape IMO.
Welham should be dropped and Salter should take his place, maybe larroyer or lovegrove in the other centre pushing Hall onto the wing if only to keep his place for goal kicking.

| How did the pitch hold up during the match? Just wondering due to the comments earlier in the thread about drainage issues due to the north stand.

| Not a fan of forwards playing in the backs but would maybe look at playing lorroyer there. Certainly play Salter in the other berth. How old is welham, 26? If he hasn't learned how to tackle now he never will.

| Rhinos 14th successive opening day win...not good 1st round opponents.
It was all ok for 50 mins if a bit rusty. Pity Charlie dropped that scoring pass early on. Worrying the way the energy levels & line speed suddenly fizzled though.
Travis was a gamble that didn't pay, way off the pace & mucked up one or two plays. Welham made some bad calls but also got exposed a lot. Compressed defence relies on line speed.
Disappointed but we'll get better.

| Quote: Sibbs Rhinos "I seem to read this a lot these days, that most teams in Superleague believe their forward pack is better than ours. Just what is this based on exactly? Is it league wins? No can't be that we've finished within the top five for the last 10 years. Is it cup wins? No can't be that we're one of the most successful sides in recent years. Is it in terms of meters made? No can't be that we made the most meters in the league last year.
It's amazing how we've ever won anything, with all our average players it seems. Especially with our starting england captain and most successful captain ever linking up with the superleagues top try scorer at halfback.'"

Lol. In 2013 we sacked our coach, got nilled at Wembley and were on the wrong end of the worst ever playoff defeat. But we still had a better season than Leeds.
Tbf Leeds backs are awesome, but there are a few plodders in that pack. Keep Peacock fit and they will go okay, but I would expect to do a job on them at home.

| I still think sandy is your weakest link. He's proven in the last 2 years that he isn't very good and I see nothing to suggest he's improved since then. You'll flatter to deceive this season (as will Hull).
What would be the minimum you'd expect for this season to be deemed a success?

I am once again finding myself in agreement regarding our weakness, he has his own team now so no more excuses.
Minimum expectation is an improvement on last year.
