| The ref got a couple of calls wrong last night for you guys as they do every week for different teams. Youve had your fair share of the good calls in the past too.
On a different note the ref isnt the one tackling around the head. Rovers discipline is awful at the minute and was last week (or the week before) when you were on TV too.

To be fair though Dave, the calls that the ref got wrong last night ultimately ended up with the game being over as a contest. Not saying that we would have won without his mistakes leading up to the sin-binning but the game was nicely poised im sure you will agree.

First half was nicely poised although Warrington were the far better team. I'd have fancied them to expose you in the last 20 when you tired irrespective of the refs incompetence.
I thought the ref then made a couple of strange calls primarily the ball steal decision but these things go for you sometimes and against others. I can recall 5 or 6 instances last year for example on your way to 4th in the league where you had some outragous luck.
Putting the ref to one side for a minute you must have noticed in the last few games Rovers defensive technique start to become suspect leading to a lot of head shots. Morgan said in the HDM that there's no discipline problem, i'd disagree and Clint Newton appears to be the worst for it. Not sure whats up with Newton but he was tugging for a breater every 5 mins too.

| I thought Mr Smith was cr@p both ways to be fair. I think we had more calls against us then for us, but Im bound to think that.

It's not the number of calls he gets wrong, its where and when he gets them wrong, he allowed Wire to regain posession with an incorrect penalty for stripping the ball right on our line, late in the tackle count which after such defending was always going to result in a try. Giving us a penalty 90 yards from the opposition line is not 'balancing' it up.
He was awful and biased last night in the way he refereed the game and if you look at the replay, every time he was in contact with our lads he had a scowl on his face, but was quite happy to have a laugh and a joke with Wire.
If I was Morgan I would get Hudgell to formally complain about Smiths manhandling of Newton, he is a coward behind a referees uniform, knowing Newton could not retaliate. He was clearly 'gunning' for Newts and had a smug look on his face after he sin binned him. His insinuation that Newts was feigning injury was a disgrace, the bloke was packed in ice this afternoon and clearly carrying an injury.
He is a cheat in my book and he helped them win.

The 'ball strip' penalty was a bad decision, but IIRC Smith would have seen it from behind the Rovers player and would not have seen how the ball ended up in his hands. It most likely looked like a strip from his POV.
His treatment of Newton was poor I agree. It was clear that Newton was carrying a genuine injury and it's not up to the ref to decide otherwise. If he thought time was being wasted he should have started stopping the clock or asked for Newton to be treated off the pitch. Manhandling him was unprofessional to say the least.
I don't think that Smith is biased in the normal sense of the word, and AFAIK he has no connection to Wire that would lead him to favour them particularly. What he [iis[/i, without doubt, is one of the very worst officials in the game. I don't think there was any more to it than his usual utter incompetence.

So why give a penalty in such a vital position at a crucial point in the game if he could n't see it. Could you imagine a a witness in court being accepted if they 'didn't see it' but stated 'I assumed he stabbed him'. Benefit of the doubt to us would have been fairer as his decision was the catalyst for what came next.

Refs do similar every week. How many times have you seen a ball dislodged at the PTB by a tackler/marker and the ref give a knock-on because he's just turned round and seen a loose ball without seeing how it came loose?
If you see a player in a two-man tackle and one of the two men suddenly turns around with the ball in his hands then a ball-steal is far more likely than a misdirected pass.

Quite right - as you say they have no option but to use their skill and judgement in assessing what the most likely play was when they and their touch judges are unsighted.

Given their overwhelming possession and the fact they were up against it missing 6 first team players, I think they just did enough, yes.
