| quoteI watched young Oakes last year and he was by far WTW best prospect (along with a kid called Will Dagger who is now at Warrington). The lad has strength beyond his years and great pace, I'd predict him getting a run out by the end of the year. In the near future I can see him been a real player and if Hull KR carry on his development he will be an England player for years to come. You have a good one there.... However it is a great loss to us!!!!'" ]
I've just watched the limited clips of Oakes on the Internet and whilst it is obviously going to be a step up for him this year into the Academy and then a huge leap into the first team he does look a very special player at his age group.

Young Oakes trained with the Wakefield first team on a number of occasions at the age of 15/16 and was quite impressive (according to a couple of the players). I have been led to believe that had he stayed at WTW he would have got a run out in the festive friendlies to see how he did, I think he will be fine at academy level but obviously the step up to SL is a big one, its not unheard of having a 16/17 year old winger play though!!

He looks a player all right on the usual you tube clips. He looks like he could play first team soon.
Apologies for pinching him we can sympathize.

Don't see why. We messed up in my opinion trying to get him in on another passport. If you want a star signing make sure you do it right. You can't dick people like that about.

| Would love to know the real story behind the Mason disaster. :-S
Thankfully the club seems to have learned it's lesson since then (in one way).

Didn't he sign on the understanding he could get a Tongan passport but then got rejected for it? I think he actually went to Tonga to try get it i maybe wrong (I usually am) but when Willie got here he spent more time in pubs and clubs then anywhere else

It seems Catalaan are having the same passport problems. When he signed for Hull KR
he claimed to be waiting for a Tongan passport now he’s waiting for a Samoan passport in order to join the Dragons. Perhaps your comment about dicking him about is unfounded

| From piecing little bits together, I think plan A was Galea would get a Maltese passport. When that didn't work, we asked Mason to get a Tongan one. He was entitled, iirc, but Tonga had just had elections and was going through a bit of a constitutional crisis.
Either way, I think we learned that a big name player isn't the way to smash the glass ceiling. The only way is to grind through it with hard work and hard cash. The talk of a five year plan is more realistic - that's no guarantee that it'll work, of course. And an iconic signing can still be a statement of intent, but you need to support them with a lot of other stuff.
