What would have been the point of working it out over 24 hours if other channels of buying the membership were not open? To shift 1600 in 3 days must surely imply a big take-up online.

Ever thought that the gross margin on books is typically 50%+ (this is not made up BTW, I have some experience in this area). So the direct cost of giving away the books could be £5.50 each, as opposed to the full £10 cost needed to subsidise the derby ticket.
