Plenty of players come with baggage, mick crane always had problems off the pitch, but what a player.! Paul gallen, who is arguably the best forward in rugby league at the moment has always had problems off the pitch, probably worse than cockayne, but in my humble opinion you are paid for what you do on the pitch not off it.I think that he should be given a contract and a warning any more slip ups your sacked and hold my breath that he dosen't gaff again, because for me he is the man in rovers team who gives 100% every time.!

What an out and out plonker you are, there is an old saying, the price of wisdom is age, well im certainly at an age where i can say i ve learnt a great deal, including, about me as a person i but wish i have had that same knowledge and understanding thirty years ago or so when as a young man, (without going into detail) i did some stupid things which did get me into trouble on occasions.
Sometimes it would be out of pure ignorance and immaturity, but do you now what?, gradually i as i got older and listened to older heads i became wiser and more mature and became to realise that if i kept my head down and worked hard i would eventualy achieve something.
I can honestly say ive met quite a few people along the way who also did things which they now regret but are now wiser for it but according to you Mr or Mrs goody two shoes we should have all been slung on the scraphepap for our misdoings all those years ago with no chance to learn from our mistakes.

I have plenty of time for people who at least admit their mistakes as long as they eventualy learn from them but, what i have no time for is sanctimonious pr..ts d040.gif like you who seem to think that your opinions are the right ones and anyone with opposing views and opinions should be lambasted.

Like i said in my previous post, i have my opinion which is that Ben should be given another contract as long as he keeps his head down and concentrates on his on the field activities, learns from his previous mistakes puts the past behind and moves on to a produtive and successful future, i also stated in my previous post that i respect other peoples opinions even though i may not aggree with them, its a shame you dont show that same respect, perhaps you need to do a little more living and recieve a little more education at the same time.

Got told today that Ben has been offered a 2 year extension but on reduced terms but also that hes been offered a 3 year deal by Crusaders with an increase in wages, i hope he repays the clubs loyalty and sticks with us

I like this post a lot. I'm still don't think we should offer Cockayne a new contract, because for me, although I like what he does on the field, racism is just too abhorrent and the club comes first. I do think that he did not realise what he was doing but I also think that that is possibly when you see the real person.

That's just my opinion, I completely respect everyone else's view on this issue and I won't be up in arms if he stays.

If true, it will be a test of his love of the club. I don't see why he should have reduced terms, surely any deal is based on his rugby ability and he has improved a lot in the last two seasons.

Unlike some on here, I don't expect our players to be bastions of moral virtue. If they break the rules let the club deal with it. If they break the law let the courts deal with it. If the guy does what we want him to do give him a new contract. If he doesn't then don't. Simple really.

Fantastic.

Rovers would be daft if they let him go, been the standout player in almost every game this season.

I just wanted to write "he's dead to me", I just like the flow of it, it isn't what I really think.

I agree, he turns in good performances but it's just been a too much for me. I don't, as Pudsey Robin says above expect the players of our club to be moral bastions on the whole, but my own personal feeling is that I can't support a person that appears to be as Cockayne is. I respect entirely what he did serving in the forces but rugby league is a big thing for me that I do not wish to be sullied.

As I said on an earlier thread, our game game was the first to have a black captain of Great Britain, it is born out of the working classes of the north fighting for equal rights. I know I'm in an ivory tower here and pontificating but it's just how I feel, I'm not really looking to debate this, I fully respect everyone else's difference of opinion here.

Ok. I'm assuming from your post that you have committed similar offences to Cockeyed?

Are you a reformed rascist or grievious bodily harmed-esque assaulter? No? Thought so. Then I guess you fall into the same category at the rest of us. I.e., normal.

I've done some rotten things in my time that I'm now embarrassed about and ashamed of. I've learned and am now a responsible adult (I hope). Will Ben ever be. Hmmm??

This is the difference between you, me and him. Ben's shown his true colours when he dissed his army colleagues, then went on to reiterate the badness by attacking a man to the ground then re-attacking him by kicking him - now senseless -near to death. He then proceeded to cherry-pink-ice the cake by pretending he had flashbacks to the war he never fought in - then revealed his true view with regards to Asian immigrants. Thing is - he's had his chances to reform. Difference is he hasn't taken them.

Once convicted - would you have behaved like Cockeyed and re-offended again? Or, would you have learned? By all accounts you did. So did I. Cockeyed hasn't.

Please don't compare yourself to him him. He's not humble and still thinks he's great. His job doesn't help him with that. That's the difference between you and him.

Clearly your morals are just as bad as your values!
You are correct I could be considered Mrs Goody Two shoes, you see I have always known right from wrong so I hanve managed the last 40 odd years mistake free!
I do believe people can change and should be given the support and resources to do so...However Ben Cockayne should have gone to prison, he did not and your club stood by him for his sickening crime, he repaid your club by displaying racist behaviour, he clearly has not matured and has shown no gratitude to the people who supported him and gave him the second chance...simple fact he is scum and always will be.

Oh I forgot I am educated to degree level, I was raised on a council estate (North Hull), I have worked with drug addict, offenders, victims of crime to name a few...

Mutual respect, people! Or temper your language and pretend at least.

I was and remain pretty deeply unimpressed with Cockayne's behaviour.
However, after somebody is punished by their employer, unless and until they err again they should be allowed to get on with their job.
On the other hand, the prospect of a testimonial year for him (2015?) would be uncomfortable. There are limits. He's versatile and playing well and I always think you should try to separate people from the things they do (I never bought in to the role model thing, even as a kid). But again there are limits.

There you go again, judging people just because their views don't fit in with yours.
You may be educated to degree standard, it doesn't stop you being a bigot.
P.S I hope you show a little more tollerance towards the drug addicts you've worked with as I would assume due to the nature of their addictions they may have had to do some fairly unsavoury things to feed their habits.

Ironic on a thread about Cockayne.
