If Rugby League Rocks, then Hull KR is its Soul.: |
|
| Quote: Dave K. "What a load of rubbish, there has been plenty of English halfs over the years that are better players than Campese, how had he won everything, he hasn't won the NRL GF or even played in the final, very little representative rugby, in fact he's maybe had 3/4 good seasons in his career.
Whoever gave him a long contract on the back of 6 or so good games wants sacking.'"
Got to agree with you here, Dave. I expect that will be a combination of Chester and Mike Smith up for sacking then for the illogical Campese contract extension. With Chester gone, Smith demoted to be in charge of paper clips, that probably leaves the Chairman alone to face the music or carry the can for this unfortunate Campese debacle. Still nothing ventured......etc.
Campese was a good player but not outstanding, especially in a Rovers shirt. Past his best when he signed for us and will be remembered by the Red Army as an expensive, overpaid and injury-ridden liability in the main.
Using the illogical comparison to Roger Millward proffered by Grimsby Red is a total non starter. I was a programme seller for the club when we signed Roger Millward in 1966. What the Dodger brought to us in a very short space of time was class, humility, leadership, bravery and creativity in equal spades and onwards throughout his subsequent illustrious playing career in Red and White. Only Brian Lockwood impressed me more on a personal level during this time. I never got to meet or speak to Campo, but I imagine those that have met or worked with him and Roger Millward will be more on the side of the Dodger. True legend.

Campese has won absolutely nothing and has spent most of his career near the bottom of the table with both Canberra and Rovers...i assume you had been on the port when you posted this...

| Humility is something people on here could learn from Campese, he refused a simple conversion because he didn't want to take Mal Meninga's record point score for a single NRL game. I also watched Millward et al play in a semi-professional sport akin to the bottom half of the championship these days. Campo's body let him down at the end, it comes to all great sports people, so what. He's rugby through and through and all that you lot can do is slag him off now that he's gone. Small provincial minds from a small provincial city, shame on you all.

Roger Millward MBE gets over 4 stone and 10 inches from Campese yet played over 40 internationals , was an outstanding player against Australia and in"big" games generally and is universally acknowledged throughout RL , apart from yourself of course, as an all time great of the sport...
Terry won nothing, played no internationals and will not be recognised as an all time great of the game...
Terry , decent player as he could be when on the field, had the heart of a pea...Millward had the heart of a lion...the difference is profound.
I think you could do to learn a thing or 2 about the game

30596_1286642206.jpg If there is no struggle, there is no progress. Those who profess to favor freedom, and yet depreciate agitation, are men who want crops without plowing up the ground. They want rain without thunder and lightning. They want the ocean without the awful roar of its many waters. This struggle may be a moral one; or it may be a physical one; or it may be both moral and physical; but it must be a struggle.

All Rugby League Hall of Fame inductee's.
I'm a big Campo fan, but he was nothing on those blokes.

I can't believe a Rovers fan believe's that. Millward was one of the greatest players of all time. Campese was a good player 5 years ago.

Terry Campese did not win all of the trophies down under. The best he did was a NSW cap in a loss and a semi-finals victory over Penrith - I don't even know if he got more than a cap for Australia.
He had a 2 year period (2008 - 2010) were he was coming into the top of his game. This culminated with nearly winning the Dally M and then the year after playing brilliantly in leading Canberra to their first finals win in god knows how long. Unfortunately he was badly injured against Wests in that finals series and never ever recovered.
In his prime he was gifted as he was big, mobile, good passer and had a massive kick. Unfortunately due to a succession of injuries it was never to be for him. He could have been thought of as one of the greats if he could have continued on from 2010 - he didn't.
The 2 years of quality amount to a "what might have been career" and to mention him in the same breath as Milward is frankly ridiculous!

This from someone allegedly from Grimsby. Campese was an expensive mistake, Roger was a true star.

| Campese will probably have to go down in history as one of the biggest flops to play for HKR and in terms of salary to playing time he must be the worst value player we've ever had at the club?
I know a lot of people have said he should have realised he was "done" like Weyman did, but that must be so hard for a top sportsman or woman to be able to acknowledge they can't go anymore, and that sport they've been spending all their lives playing they just can't do it now, they just can't shrug off the knocks as easily etc.
Maybe I'm wrong, but I honestly don't get the impression at all that he was just here for a holiday, for the money or whatever. I think he really wanted to come over here and play good rugby. Obviously, that hasn't worked out for anyone in the end sadly.
