I bet even by today's standards the Caligula episode is still a bit shocking. Great by the standards of its time. Even Christopher Biggins as Nero couldn't spoil it.

John Hurt was born for that role.

| Just been and seen the new Transformers movie and I can't decide what to think.
As a fan its always nice to see Optimus kick the snot out of Megatron again but the odds against him which he has to overcome are getting more and more far fetched.
Also the way they are wiping out the origional chars kinda means they dont fully understand the concept IMHO.

I feel your pain. I am usually very cynical about seeing at the pictures anything that has been written in a book. I guess the same concept could be stretched (at a push) to the raping of a cartoon.
The fine nuances that make the written story are lost within the time constraints of a film, the derivative interpretation, and the director's egotistical and irrelevant stamp.
The exceptions to this are "The Darling Buds of May" (I KNOW! ITV!!) which although was TV - not film - was excellent, and Harry Potter, whilst not a complete interpretation, did reflect my own imagination to an acceptable level.

A film about transforming robots went and got far-fetched?
No way, you're kiddin'
Surely?

My point is that give a Hollywood Director an origional idea and they can't help themselves they automatically think 'I can do better' even if there isnt an awful wrong with the orgional idea.
As an example the orgional idea was that a trasformer looked like a lorry, car, plane that has just transformed and stood up.
as an example this is the old Starscream
He looks like a plane that has stood up (Very 80's colours but still).
The director decided that that made to much sense so he did this to him.

The last work that I can remember being near to the mark was the lord of the rings.
There was somethings I didnt agree with (Losing Glorfindel and the fact that Faramir was tempted by the ring in the films but he was far removed and above that in the books).
Infact that proves none of them can help themselves.
Good call. The Lord of the Rings trilogy was passable. Still warped, though. Should have been filmed in East Yorkshire as the Shires and the forests in Tolkien's book was based on the countryside around here after he fell in love with it after convalescing near Roos after the First World War.
Guess they preferred the all expenses paid 2 years in NZ instead. Probably sensible as the rugby is better there, too.
Of course, the saddest example of a Hollywood director welching on the deal (is it welch or welsh? ) is George Lucas who managed to do it to himself. He waited 20 years for technology to develop enough to release the potential in his imagination only for Star Wars 1,2 and 3 to be the biggest disappointment in film history. Still good films, but SW 4,5 and 6 are all time greats. Just goes to show, George, it's not the special effects, it's the soul of films that make them great. At least waiting 20 years meant we got the gift of Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan, though .
Thought of some other examples of good transpositions from book to screen:
All Creatures Great and Small (the BBC telly version, not the film - that was dreadful);
Pride and Prejudice (again the BBC version, none of the films passed muster);
Jane Eyre (BBC version, again!);
...errm, that's it, I think.
My favourite films tend to be ones not adapted from books as they cannot disappoint - Star Wars, Terminator, True Lies... the exception being Harry Potter, as already mentioned.
But I'd still say to all those kids who wait for these films to be released (Harry Potter and the Twilight saga being the current craze examples) do yourself a favour and read the books instead. A far greater experience.

You say "Tom-ato..." Aren't they just the same thing, like Mum, Mam and Mom?
I think Sci-fi killed the forum.

No that's a ghastly American incorrect pronunciation, same as Mom is an unacceptable assault on the English language as is faucet, trash can and trunk (when they mean "boot" instead of the thing supporting the branches).
Not sure if "tidbit" is an Americanism?
