| IIRC Rainey already had a fair amount of experience in the NRL with Western Suburbs before signing for you. He was banned for steroid abuse (I think) after winning their young player of the year award, and came to England to try and jump-start his career when the ban was up.

| Very hard to say which part time players could have, given full time training, made it in Super League. Depends as much on dedication as anything.
Perfect example of a player exceeding his talent was Keith Tindall, good at schoolboy level, but outshone by others in a very good team, where the "stars" of that team chose women and ale over dedication whereas Keith stuck to training in gruelling winter conditions and eventually reaped the benefits.

| Andy Smith would have made it in supre league but like a lot of others around at the time full time came to late as they were at an age when they would at best have had 2/3 years he has a good job & pays better than super league Taking into account he can go on untill he is in his 60's. A lot of the others mentioned would have been better players for full time training & not having to juggle jobs & playing.

| Remember Lee Sibery (sp) showing a lot of promise and potential around 1998/99, maybe could have made it as an SL full-back with the right support.

| Just out of interest, anyone know why the following only had very brief careers (1 season or less IIRC) with us?
Keith Beauchamp
Jamie Kennedy
Daniel Brown
Three Aussies who played for us around 1998 and all looked good players, but they only stayed for a very short time.

Keith Beauchamp - Was a high profile signing. Think he ended up playing 3/4 games for us, scoring a hat trick on debut at home to Dewsbury iirc. He played for Illawarra and Hunter in NRL I think.
Jamie Kennedy - Was a rangey back rower from what I remember and a pretty good player. Dont remember what happened to him though.
Daniel Brown - Spent 2 or 3 seasons with us at either Hooker or Half back. Was a good player, went on to spend many years with Oldham and is brother of Nathan Brown.

| Lee Sibrey was 31 when he signed for us so they would have been no chance of him ever playing any higher.
Jamie Kennedy had a couple of very good years playing for Leigh after he left us

Would be interested to know what your definition of "making it" is. In my opinion if you are good enough to play top flight rugby then you have most deffo made it. I would also suggest that somebody like Jon Aston who didnt play top flight rugby but had a long career with Hull, Rovers and Rochdale in the lower leagues also has fair claim to have "made it."

Thompson may have been a limited player going forward but his defence was as good as any backrow forward around in the early 90s. His combination with Paul Fletcher at that time was very under-rated and, in my opinion, far better than the much vaunted Michael Jackson and Garry Price who both achieved Great Britain honours.

Was it 1994 we got relegated, with Barkworth and Charlesworth on the wings? I thought Oliver and Brown played after that.
