Seeing as its off season ...!!!

What would be the best 17 you've had in the last 10 years ? , so starting from the 2006 season and try and put players in the positions they mostly played

Ah, some lovely SL nostalgia. IMO and off the top of my head...

Briscoe, Fox, Jake Webster, Welham (partly for length of service, partly for the pinball try and partly to annoy SirStan), Sio (honourable mention for Disco Hodgson).

I'll come back to stand-off, Dobson

Vella, J.Hodgson, Paea, Newton, Galea, Murrell (maybe a bit sentimental, but only a bit)

Fisher, Gene, Geez we've been through some props - Weyman, even though he only did one season. And Aizue. Again, some sentiment.

Clear bias towards our early years in SL. there's 11 overseas players in there already, I think, so I'll give the nod to Cooke over Blake Green at stand-off.

Might do a disappointing 17 later on. Short odds on the inclusion of Wayne Ulugia and Ryan Bailey.

Would Willie Mason make for selection?

Jeez, both Hull and Rovers have made some pretty ordinary signings during the SL era, even when not in the "premier elite".

Would be interesting to have both sets of fans compile their "Most disappointing signings since 1996 XIII" and work out which team would triumph, although I think the idea would probably be to celebrate which team was the worst. icon_biggrin.gif

Aye, Mason would be one of the first names on that team sheet too. Also, Sean Gleeson.

The thing is then, there'd be players who I'd feel bad about using to fill out the squad. Campese and Justin Poore didn't get injured deliberately. Kris Keating's form was indifferent, but I always had the impression he was trying. And in fairness to somebody like Bailey even, if he had genuine issues to work through, that's not something he'll have done deliberately either.

I wouldn't put Fozzard in the worst signings personally

Misili Man's got to get in that team, and who was that lad we flew over from Australia last year, he played a game got trashed so we sacked him?

Just looking through some old squads there's people who I have no idea who they were.

Ryan O'Hara? Did he have a beard?

That big pudding Mills, Danny Ward, Andreus Bauer ffs!

I had a gallenteer /tilse style hatred of Gareth morton back in the day.all my pals loved him but he certainly didn't play to his size attack or defence.stanley and fisher were the opposite same for cockayne for all the side issues.Vella stands out with Newton and Galea. .Goddard was a good centre certainly as good as any in last few year

Fitzhenry? Really?

Just focussing on wingers you could have listed Omari Caro, Sam Latus or Liam Colbon, all way behind Fitz, and that's before he re-invented himself as interchange hooker with the Fish.

I agree about Fitzhenry.

I think a lot of it is relative expectation. The likes of Latus and Bauer were inexpensive players who could fill in if needed, and I'd say they filled that job description okay. Kris Keating was supposed to replace Dobson and he had a better NRL pedigree, but never got close to living up to that billing.

Also to establish a reputation for being a bit rubbish, you have to at least be good enough to get a run of games. You at least remember Latus, whereas there's plenty who came from the academy to play only once or twice.

So, 'players I thought could potentially be good signings, but weren't' XIII

Must have played at least 1 game (sorry taulapapa, maki and paniu).

Dixon. Not much in it between him and Eden. Both made significant contributions, compared to the three quarters though...
Ulugia
Ratu
Gleeson
Thompson
Campese. Good bloke by all accounts, but he came, he saw, he convalesced. Fond memories of his performance vs Wakefield this season.
Kelly, pips Keating. Kelly did at least have one good season, but his attitude this year cost us much more than Keating's averageness did.
Mills. Specifically the second contract - signed that and was barely seen again.
Carlile. Tbf, didn't do much wrong and won't have been a big earner, but in four seasons he didn't do much at all.
Bailey.
Mason.
Langley. Seemed like a good guy too, and looked the part with his massive arms. Past his best by 2014 though and only played 11 games.
Any suggestions for the third backrower?

Ratu, that's him. I forgot all about him. He was so pants, I don't even remember him. Must have disappeared without trace after we got rid.

As I'm a soft touch, I will bow to peer pressure about Fitzhenry, who was signed as a winger as I recall, was really nothing special, but did play the odd blinder at hooker sometimes. Fitzhenry out of my worst Rovers SL team and Ratu in.

I've amended and edited my earlier post.

Ratu is still going with Rochdale, so we might see him again this year.
