From a post on leagueunlimited. no idea where they came from but here they are anywaysI've been reading another forum where they publish the financial results of the clubs. It doesn't make good reading and one has to wonder if its possible for SL to remain as it is once the next TV deal is negotiated. With the economic downturn, the demise of Setanta and with the Union-biased domestic channels not being interested in bidding, Sky will surely slice a huge chunk off the next deal. That IMO will make SL as it currently is no longer viable.
Hull FC -PROFIT £185,000
Bradford - Loss £17,000
Warrington - Loss £212,000
Cas - Loss £369,000
Saints - Loss £449,000
Hull KR - Loss £478,000
Wigan - Loss £592,000
Salford - Loss £832,000
Huddersfield - Loss £1,377,000
Harlequins - Loss £1,819,000
Wakefield - Have not filed accounts and recently faced a winding up order, so it's unlikely theirs will be good. Same with Celtic.
The clubs bolded simply don't have the backing to survive many more years like that. Clubs will fold in the coming years, the sport seems to be shrinking at professional level, with franchises becoming less viable due to the costs. This means even less media coverage (Is less than none possible?) and even fewer people playing the game.'"
Some nonsense in it, but the figures make for interesting reading

| Well that gives a bit of context to the Rovers figures, though Hudds and Harlequins seem to be way off everyone else

It does. These only show the financial results for 2008, a single year, though and not the overall balance sheet.
What I would say is that few clubs operate with robust business models that are self-sustaining, apart from Leeds and Hull FC, which is disappointing. Whether it's Davy at Huddersfield, Wilkinson at Salford or Moran at Warrington, there is huge over-reliance on individual benefactors to just keep putting their hands in their pocket. The salary cap is working in terms of levelling out the competition, but not in terms of helping clubs manage their financial positions responsibly. You do have to wonder how much longer the operation in London will go on and what purpose it serves other than a weekend away for supporters of the other clubs.

| The amount of money that the RFL have put into Cetic and Quins would make interesting reading. To see them record heavy losses as they have done here, and with the financial help of the RFL, doesn't say much for their business management.
Also, think before long, the RFL will have to hone in more on the more close to home rugby clubs, instead of trying to "expand" the game to hopeless causes.

Fully agree. Catalans has been great IMO - competitive team, strong local interest and support, but if London and Celtic were replaced by Widnes and Halifax can't say I'd be bothered. Wonder how much money's been spent trying to get London going over 30 years for what - gates of 3k? Time to stop throwing good money after bad IMO.

| Totally agree.
Gonna add, this is probably the only time I'll say that lol.
Think they'd do a lot more harm than good by sticking perpingan in the frame too. Can see them getting the backing from the RFL, after all they stuck them in NL2

Agree, can you see the RFL putting their hand up and admitting that expansion into non RL areas doesnt work so is no longer on the agenda?

Not a chance while Sky is bankrolling the game.

i dont think you should just chuck them out but i would demote them if they go insolvent and give another club ago in SL ,they add nothing tbh if the local peaple dont back SL then you have to give it too someone else who will ,tbf they where dropped in at the deep end too soon they need to build up interest in wales over years

| Rugby League has been growing at grass roots level in London with more people than ever playing the game at amateur level.
The game is getting a foothold - it's a slow and painstaking business but progress has definitely been made.
The demise of Harlequins RL would put all this back IMO and that is why the RFL would not let it happen.

| Now that FC are making a profit, should they pay the bail out money back to the RFL to assist other clubs, after all, without it they would be in NL at best or even out of business.

Figure varied in the press, but they had their debts cleared and a full set of players, directors and coaches thrown in. Probably in excess of a million.
