The forward pass rule, states, I think, that the ball should travel
backwards in relation to the player making it (the pass). It didn't on that occasion, or the pass immediately before it for that matter, which was 'flat', or forward as it is more correctly known. It is has become the norm these days, and there is no easy solution to it. Except for the refs to ping it more often.
