| Quote: Double Movement "Sorry Geoff this is all before my time, I thought Danensian said "Since the very first match in 1951."
I was minus 7 when all this took place.
I assumed this was the very first Dons match of all time but I'll stand corrected if I've misunderstood.'"
No need to apologise Danensian did say that he had supported the Dons since there very first game but he didn't say he attended the game.
The Dons first ever league game was against Wakefield Trinity played on August 18th at the York Rd Greyhound Stadium the Dons won the game by 10pts -3pts the attendance was estimated to be 10,000.

Thanks Geoff.
I remember visiting the Greyhound Stadium with my dad in the late 1960s to watch the dogs but that was before I started watching the Dons. I started watching the Dons in the mid 1970s.
In the later 1970s, a friend of mine used to work as a mechanic at Claybourns Renault dealership; Stewart Piper used to work there too. My friend helped Stewart to organise some events during his testimonial season, I joined in and helped out too. We had a night at Askern dog track. I can't remember too much about the evening apart from not backing a winner all night! I've bought all my cars from Stewart ever since!
I just assumed Danensian had meant he'd attended the first match when he said he was a supporter at the time.

I can remember watching Mike & Bernie Winters playing in a charity football match at the Greyhound Stadium.

Father in Law was one of those 10k. He weaned me off football and got me to sample the delights of Tattersfield circa 1978. The ritual of crossing the metal girder that bridged the small dyke opposite Yarbrough Terrace was a Sunday afternoon treat.

| Well spotted Geoff. He said since the first game, not that he actually attended. How come we are discussing what happened 65 years ago ?

I think it was a very large diameter round metal pipe we had to straggle to cross the dyke.

Sorry I should have clarified my answer. I was at that first game at the Greyhound Stadium in Cusworth Lane. I went with my dad and a Scottish gentleman who was staying with us. Viewing at the stadium was poor because there was no banking. However there was a low rail a little way back from the pitch which I stood on to get a better view.
I have refreshed my memory of those days from my copy of Peter Hilton's book "50 Years of Bloody Sundays" which was a history of Doncaster RLFC from 1951 to 2001 the title reflecting the title of the famous TV programme about the club "Another Bloody Sunday".
Incidentally I notice on page 76 of the book thumbnail photos of the club officials for the 1986/87 season including one Geoff Roebuck, Secretary/Director.
I attended one or two more matches at the greyhound stadium that season though have little memory of them. The club won 21, and drew 1, of the 36 games that season and finished in 11th place (out of 31) in the league ahead of such clubs as Leeds, Wakefield Trinity and St Helens.

Wasn't it Tattersfield that was prone to flooding around the kick off area ? When it rained a lot there used to be a big puddle in the centre circle area, or is it me hallucinating ?

The whole of the pitch was prone to water logging it got worse when they built the Morrisons Supermarket on York Rd it did vastly improve when they relayed the pitch & installed a new drainage system during the John Desmond era.
I wish I had a pound for every gallon of water I have pumped off the pitch one year it was so bad I got an helicopter to fly up & down over the pitch to help dry the pitch out & disperse the surface water so the important game against Sheffield Eagles went ahead.

| The whole Marshgate area was flooded following the 1946/47 winter which was why they built those flood relief channels. I don't think they ever really solved the problem though. That must be just about the lowest point in Doncaster and there only needs to be excess water flowing into the Don from the hills around Sheffield for the problem to recur though I think the Don is in a slightly deeper channel there now.

Do you know the name of the other river that flows through Doncaster?
