Last night and the story of the Margin Meter .........
After about 10 minutes or so with the score at 0-0 the Magic Margin Meter made its first appearance. The forecast was for Cas to win by 20 points.
Fair enough, they won by 14 points.
EXCEPT ............Salford scored first, an unconverted try. Score 4-0 to Salford. after which the Margin Meter made its second appearance ... forecast Salford to win by about 13. The commentary team howled with laughter apart from Clarkey, since it is his baby.
Now Clarkey was all defensive, pointing out that it was early days yet and there may be some fine-tuning to be done.
Then he said that the score was not part of the inputed data and that the Magic Margin Meter did not know the score. Instead it was going on data like possession times, yards gained in plays and so on.
Well if that is the case, how come when Salford scored 4 points (with very little change in possession and territory and yards gained, since Cas were still the better side) did the Margin Meter shift by 20+13 = 33 points???
The Magic Margin Meter should have still predicted a Cas win, but by about 10-16 points. Since all that had fundamentally changed was Salford got 4 points... alright there will have been a small shift in territory, possession and yards gained but come on!
Anyway, Phil is sticking with his Magic Margin Meter.
