Quote: swifty62 "what teams were put out today n who scored.'"

We had a full team out bar Wello, Eastmond, Perry and Lomax, who are all still recovering from injury. We swapped in the second half though, putting out a few of our 'second string' players who actually have all played at first grade thanks to megga injury problems over the last two seasons.

I was impressed by your right side (left as us Saints fans saw them in the second half). There were some really nippy players on that wing who caused us problems. Are they regular players for you guys or newbies? I'm sure you'll appreciate that my attention was primarily upon my own team given we have some new faces in it, a new coach and some old faces missing. But I couldn't help notice that side as they kept threatening our line in front of me!

I enjoyed the match but it was bloody freezing in the East Stand! I think that's where I'm going to be spending my season, unless that is the away end. I am confused. I think I circumnavigated the whole stadium to get there. There are going to be a lot of lost Saints fans wandering around Widnes over the coming weeks I think!

HT (Sts First): 36-4
FT (Sts First): 52-20

REF: R Hicks

ATT: 3755

Teams:

Widnes:

1. Danny Craven; 19. Matt Gardner, 18. James Ford, 23. Tangi Ropati, 5. Paddy Flynn; 6. Anthony Thackeray, 14. Thomas Coyle; 3. Richard Varkulis, 9. Kirk Netherton, 10. Daniel Heckenberg, 20. Shane Grady, 16. MacGraff Leuluai, 17. Ben Kavanagh.
Subs: 4. Steve Tyrer, 8. Steve Pickersgill, 12. Kurt Haggerty, 15. Chris Gerrard, 25. Chris Lunt, 29. Grant Gore, 34. Jack Owens.

Saints:

22. Jamie Foster; 2. Ade Gardner, 3. Michael Shenton, 17. Gary Wheeler, 5. Francis Meli; 6. Leon Pryce, 25. Lee Gaskell; 15. Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook, 9. James Roby, 10. James Graham, 4. Sia Soliola, 12. Jon Wilkin, 13. Chris Flannery,

To Saints fan, I also noticed that we had far more success when we attacked down that side. On our right was Flynn on the wing who made a couple of good breaks and from memory, the centres were a mixture of Ropati and Ste Tyrer. Anthony Thackeray also scored from a break on our right.

Well, for your sake I hope your coach keeps that combination as it was effective. There were pacey players there who could sidestep and throw a good dummy.

Paddy Flynn was very good today and I thought Thackery had a good spell after Saints hit the 40 point mark.

Flynn was Widnes MOM for me, good run out for both sides with a few players due back for both.

Just hope we get Widnes at home in the cup now!

Would have thought the crowd would have been a bit bigger than that seeing as you are definitely going into SL.

I agree about Paddy, I thought he was our best player. It was also good to see Ste Tyrer having a go a Paddy for him taking drive on the wrong side of the pitch which meant later in the set when we kicked through to Paddy's side but he was still getting back into position. IMO if Paddy does less driving up the middle and stays on his wing; a) he'll be in position to recieve the ball if we break and also b) he won't be knackered all the time. The runs that he made on Sunday were full of pace and purpose - he can't do that if he's spent all game driving into forwards.

I still think Thackeray needs a good partner next to him to give him more time and space. Coyle doesn't do a lot to take the heat off Thacks, so when he does get the ball, the defenders are on him in a flash. Then again that also could just be the difference between championship defence and SL. If we get into SL and we take Thacks, he simply won't get the space that he currently gets. Thacks being quiet in the friendlies is probably a combination of lack of a good scrum half next to him and also playing against the likes of Wire and Saints.

Because you were playing probably your closest SL neighbours and you were putting out a strong team. How much was to get in on the day?

Thacks did score a good try,and with a top class scrumhalf at his side he will be fine. icon_thumb.gif

But as you say he is contracted with Batley and they won't let him go as he is one their key players. Not many scrum halfs or standoffs left at this time of the year as 'Fev are finding out with the loss of Briggs.
